Abstract:

Pre-formed cigarette tubes are provided in an automated fashion. Cigarettes containing a filler material are manufactured according to known methods and transferred to an apparatus for removing the filler material. The filler material within each resulting cigarette is removed therefrom. Optionally, the filler material may be recycled to the beginning of the process. The resulting pre-formed cigarette tubes are collected. At a later time, the hollow regions of those pre-formed tubes can be filled with tobacco cut filler in order to provide finished cigarettes.

Abstract:

A filter material configured for use as a filter element of a smoking article is provided, the filter material including at least one segment of fibrous tow having a plurality of superabsorbent objects dispersed therein, the superabsorbent objects comprising a starch material. Exemplary starch materials include naturally-occurring starch, hydroxyalkylated starch, starch esters, ionically modified starch, oxidized starch, hydrolyzed starch, plasticized starch, gelatinized starch, grafted starch, crosslinked starch, transglycosylated starch, starch ethers, and mixtures thereof, as well as blends of starch with other polymers. Filter elements and smoking articles, such as cigarettes, that contain the filter material are also provided. A method of preparing polymer fibers for use in filter elements is also provided, the method including adding the starch material to a fiber precursor solution prior to fiber extrusion or dry-blending the starch material with the polymer material to be formed into fibers.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a conductive substrate useful for Joule heating, such as in an electronic smoking article. Particularly, the invention provides a resistive heating element formed of a conductive substrate. The conductive substrate comprises an electrically conductive material and a carbonaceous additive, such as a binder material. The conductive substrate is carbonized in that it is subjected to calcining conditions to effectively reduce the carbonaceous additive to its carbon skeleton. It has been found that such carbonized substrate has surprisingly improved resistance properties in relation a substrate of the same formulation that is not carbonized. The carbonized substrate can include an aerosol precursor material. The formed resistive heating element can be included in an electronic smoking article to simultaneously provide resistive heating and aerosol formation with a single, unitary component.

Abstract:

A drug delivery article provides a dose of a volatilized drug by heating a drug carrying substrate, but not burning any material. A heat source which includes a metal oxide (e. g. , calcium oxide), an anhydrous metal sulfate (e. g. , magnesium sulfate), an inorganic salt and a sugar, generates heat upon contact of water therewith. The heat produced by the heat source heats the drug in a heat exchange relationship therewith. The drug volatilizes and is drawn into the mouth of the user of the article. Typical heat sources heat the drug to a temperature within 70. degree. C. to 200. degree. C. for 4 to 8 minutes.
