Abstract:Sterilized povidone-iodine (polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine) is obtained by irradiating povidone-iodine in the presence of iodide ions. Preferably the irradiation is effected in the presence of iodine and both iodide and iodate ions. The iodide ions, with or without iodate ions, have the effect of preventing the degradation of povidone-iodine and the gelation of iodine and povidone.
