Abstract:

coating compositions are disclosed which provide improved resistance to the transmission of vapor through various substrates, especially paper, paperboard and regenerated cellulose. The compositions comprise one or more cellulose esters, and a small amount of a blend of paraffin and an amide of a long chain saturated or unsaturated fatty acid. The composition is in a conventional solvent and preferably includes conventional plasticizers. Conventional additives such as pigments, stabilizers, etc. , may be used.

The cellulose ester is preferably cellulose acetate butyrate. The combination surfactant-curing agent is preferably ammonia- or amine-neutralized salts of sulfonated, ethoxylated hydrocarbons. The concentrate is emulsified in water and used as a coating composition. The coating has low solvent emission to the atmosphere when drying, provides a hard but flexible coating having excellent appearance, good durability, and rapid drying properties.

Abstract:

coating compositions comprising polyalkyleneimine and cellulose acetate propionate in solution, and related process and product, are disclosed. Such compositions are particularly useful as primer coatings for substrates of regenerated cellulose, paper and paperboard where cellulose ester top coatings are used. Use of such compositions as primer coatings improves adhesion of the top coating to the substrate, particularly where the coated substrate is heat-sealed, for example, in packaging applications. Also, the coating composition provides increased resistance to blocking, which is especially important where the substrate is sheet material wound in a roll.

Abstract:

The present invention provides imide-containing and amide-containing polyester resins which are useful in the formulation of coating compositions and inks. The resins comprise the reaction product of an imide or amide, a polyester-forming polyol. a polyester-forming multifunctional acid or derivative thereof, and, optionally, a fatty oil or an unsaturated fatty acid derived from a fatty oil. The imide or amide is derived from a specified alkanolamine and an imide-forming or amide-forming reactant. The alkanolamine is a primary branched alkanolamine wherein the branched alkyl group preferably contains about 2 to 10 carbon atoms. A preferred alkanolamine is 2,2-dimethyl-3-amino-1-propanol.
