The present invention includes one or more clients in communication with a server. The client desires to send a storage construct to the server for storage. The client negotiates a transmission key with the server. The client generates a storage key associated specifically with the storage construct. The client encrypts the storage construct using the storage key and encrypts the storage key using the transmission key. The encrypted storage construct and encrypted storage key are sent to the server. The server decrypts the storage key using the transmission key. The server stores the storage construct on a storage device separate from a storage device storing the storage key. A copy method creates a copy-on-write relationship between specified source data and an original image cache for updates from a designated host application. This copy-on-write relationship involves, responsive to at least a first update of each item of source data, writing an original image of said updated item of data and its associated address to the original image cache. An application outboard of the designated host application is utilized to copy all source data to secondary media without regard to whether the data has been updated since creating the copy-on-write relationship. A specified amount of data is copied from the original image cache to the secondary media. The secondary media therefore contains contents of the source data as of the moment of forming the copy-on-write relationship.

A system, apparatus, and process creates a table of contents (TOC), including one or more table of contents (TOC) entries, to manage data in a hierarchical storage management system. Each TOC entry contains metadata describing the contents and attributes of a data object within an image, which is an aggregation of multiple data objects into a single object for storage management purposes. The TOC is stored in a storage hierarchy, such as magnetic disk, for fast access of and efficient operation on the aggregated TOC entries. The system, apparatus, and process also provide for aggregating the TOC entries from one or more TOCs into a TOC set in the storage management server database. The TOC set may be manipulated and queried in order to find a particular data object or image referenced by a TOC entry. The TOC entries, TOCs, and TOC sets may be dynamically managed by the hierarchical data storage management system through implementation of a set of policy management constructs that define appropriate creation, retention, and movement of the objects within the database and storage hierarchy.

Provided is a method, system and program for storing data for later retrieval and for transfer within a storage hierarchy. A data storage subsystem stores both individual user files and also managed files, each managed file comprising an aggregation of multiple user files. Abstract:

A method for dispatching work requests in a data storage hierarchy in which directory data is promoted in variable length spans, the use of which are maximized even for work requests entering the work request queue after the span is chosen, is disclosed. A queue of work requests is initially scanned to determine if any requests therein require access to directory data stored in secondary storage within a prescribed proximity of that required by the next request to be dispatched. If such other work requests exist, then directory data in addition to that required by the next request to be dispatched is also promoted. To minimize seek time and rotational latency, the additional data is promoted from secondary storage in a single device I/O cycle. The additional data is chosen by adjusting the outer limits of the span as each work request in queue is scanned. After the actual promotion of the span of data, the existing work request is completed.
