Abstract:
A polarizing device has an arrangement of generally parallel elements disposed in an unpolarized source light beam for transmitting polarizations perpendicular to the elements and reflecting polarizations parallel to the elements. The elements may be disposed at substantially any incidence angle and may reflect the reflected beam at substantially any angle. The elements may be disposed on a substrate or embedded in a substrate. The elements may be disposed in a curved layer. The substrate may also have a curved surface. A polarizer apparatus may also have a mirror or the like for redirecting or recapturing the transmitted or reflected beam so they have similar directions or are directed to a common area. The device may also have a wave plate or the like for changing the polarization of the transmitted or reflected beams so they have the same polarization.

Abstract:
A multilayer wire-grid polarizer for polarizing light includes a stack of thin film layers disposed over a substrate, including a wire-grid array of elongated metal elements having lengths longer than a wavelength of the light and a period less than half the wavelength of the light. One of the layers can include a thin film layer with a refractive index greater than a refractive index of the substrate. One of the thin film layers can include a dielectric array of non-metal elements.

Abstract:
A wire-grid polarizer includes a wire-grid layer disposed over a substrate. A plurality of contiguous dielectric-grid layers are contiguous with one another and disposed directly on top of the wire-grid layer. The plurality of contiguous dielectric-grid layers includes different materials with different indices of refraction. The array of dielectric material elements and the array of metal elements are oriented substantially parallel with one another, and the arrays having substantially equal periods.

Abstract:
Optical information media containing a metal material layer and a carbon material layer are disclosed. The layering of the metal material layer and the carbon material layer are designed to reduce or eliminate problems associated with oxidation and berm formation during writing of data to the media.

Abstract:
A projection display or modulation optical system includes a spatial light modulator and an inorganic, dielectric grid polarizer. The spatial light modulator selectively encodes image information on a polarized incident light beam and the inorganic, dielectric grid polarizing beam splitter separates the image information from the beam and produces a polarized image bearing light beam. The grid polarizer includes a stack of film layers disposed over a substrate; each film layer being formed of a material that is both inorganic and dielectric; adjacent film layers having different refractive indices; and at least one of the film layers being discontinuous to form a form birefringent layer with an array of parallel ribs with a period less than approximately 260 nm.
