His SUV hit a car stopped at a traffic light, killing 47-year-old Reyda LaMadrid and seriously injuring her husband, 49-year-old Edgar Lopez, prosecutors said. The couple was delivering newspapers at the time of the incident.
They suggest that, at the very least, real estate agent and Richardson fundraiser Edgar Lopez, of Santa Fe, believed he was the man to see if someone wanted to garner a judicial appointment in Dona Ana County.

candidate to give "weekly payments" to improve odds of being selected for a judge vacancy. According to the report, Murphy said that the candidate should "put cash in an envelope and give it to Edgar Lopez," a Las Cruces real estate businessman, who'd then "hand-deliver the envelopes" to Richardson.
Edgar Lopez, who runs a real estate investment business called IMA Inc., is portrayed by government investigators as a political power broker who helped secure appointments by Richardson for those wanting to serve on Dona Ana County courts.
Allegations in a special prosecutor's report imply the practice was common in the district during Richardson's time in office and that Edgar Lopez of Las Cruces delivered the payments to the former governor. Special prosecutor Matt Chandler has said the investigation is ongoing.
