  • Method, Apparatus, And Program Product For Autonomic Patch Deployment Based On Autonomic Patch Risk Assessment And Policies

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8261353, Sep 4, 2012
  • Filed:
    Jun 2, 2008
  • Appl. No.:
    12/131562
  • Inventors:
Praveen Prasanna Kumar Hirsave - Austin TX, US
Edmund Troche - Austin TX, US
Minto Tsai - Austin TX, US
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 11/00
  • US Classification:
    726 25, 717172, 717173, 717177, 717178, 713152
  • Abstract:
An automatic patch deployment system is provided that deploys a patch according to an assessed risk and a policy. The policy may specify actions to be taken to deploy the patch for different categories of risk. The automatic patch deployment system receives a patch notification, an assessment of the risk, and the policy and deploys the patch accordingly. For example, installation of a patch may be indefinitely delayed for high risk patches, rescheduled for medium risk patches, or installed immediately for low risk patches.
  • Method, Apparatus, And Program Product For Autonomic Patch Risk Assessment

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20070033445, Feb 8, 2007
  • Filed:
    Aug 2, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/195037
  • Inventors:
Praveen Hirsave - Austin TX, US
Edmund Troche - Austin TX, US
Minto Tsai - Austin TX, US
  • International Classification:
    G06F 11/00
  • US Classification:
    714047000
  • Abstract:
An automatic risk assessment system is provided that determines a risk for the patch based on collected activity metrics, file weights, a list of files affected by the patch, and other factors. An application monitor collects metrics from the application to determine the level of activity of the application or other component to be patched. The patch may have associated therewith metadata including a list of files that will be affected by the patch. Policies may store information about how risk is to be assessed. This information may include, for example, file weights and information defining categories of risk.
  • Method For Blocking The Installation Of A Patch

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20070033586, Feb 8, 2007
  • Filed:
    Aug 2, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/195024
  • Inventors:
Praveen Hirsave - Austin TX, US
Edmund Troche - Austin TX, US
Minto Tsai - Austin TX, US
Patrick Woods - Pflugerville TX, US
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 9/445
  • US Classification:
    717174000
  • Abstract:
A method, apparatus and computer instructions are provided for blocking the installation of a patch. A patch management system is used to recognize files with a selected indicator. A selected indicator may be an identifier distinguishing the file such as size, checksum, name, or a current timestamp. The files with a selected indicator contain signatures that may be cross referenced with patch metadata. The signature of the patch file is validated against policies that indicate the patch has been approved for installation. If the patch is approved the files are installed. In response to a patch being unapproved for installation a locking mechanism locks files targeted by patches based on patch metadata, patch content, and/or patch instructions so that the patch may not be installed.

  • Filed:
    Nov 17, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/971778
  • Inventors:
Michelle Denise Swenson - Leander TX
    Edmund Troche - Austin TX
  • Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
  • International Classification:
    G06F 1300
    H04N 714
  • US Classification:
    345328
  • Abstract:
A method and implementing network computer system is provided in which completion point file positions of multimedia file presentations may be saved in persistent memory devices when a user desires to terminate a multimedia file being presented on a display device. In subsequent network and multimedia file accesses, a user is selectively able to begin play at the previously saved completion point in the multimedia file presentation, i. e. the file position at which the user had previously terminated play. The saved position in one example may include a refresh rewind of a predetermined length from the saved position to refresh a user with the content of the multimedia file being continued. In an exemplary embodiment, a user is also presented with a selection device by which the user may create a title for one or more saved files and corresponding completion points within each saved file. A default file designation may be automatically entered by the program.
