Abstract:

In the representative embodiments described in the specification, a direct connect pressure tester arrangement has a saddle which is clamped to a pipe which may contain fluid under pressure and has a drill guide with an opening extending perpendicular to the wall of the pipe, along with a resilient member held against the outer wall of the pipe. A crosspipe is attached to a bushing mounted in the saddle and a valve is attached to the crosspipe in axial alignment with the bushing with a drill supported in axial alignment on the other side of the valve. A pressure gauge is mounted in a perpendicular passage of the crosspipe and a drain valve is attached to the cross pipe in axial alignment with the pressure gauge. After the pressure tester has been mounted on the pipe to be tested, the valve adjacent to the drill bit is turned to the open position and the drill bit is moved through the valve and the drill guide and operated to drill a hole in the pipe. The pressure gauge indicates the presence of any fluid under pressure in the pipe.

An electrically conductive film contains electrically connected first and second visible light-transmissive metal or metal alloy layers separated by a visible light-transmissive crosslinked polymeric layer. The film can be joined or laminated into glazing (especially non-planar vehicular safety glazing) with reduced likelihood that the metal or metal alloy layers will be damaged or distorted. The film also can transparently shield a device that can cause or is sensitive to electromagnetic interference with reduced likelihood that the metal or metal alloy layers will fracture.

Abstract:

A device for sealing a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the heart is provided. The device includes a left atrial anchor adapted to be placed in a left atrium of the heart, a right atrial anchor adapted to be placed in a right atrium of the heart, and an elongate member adapted to extend through the passageway and connect the left and right atrial anchors. The right atrial anchor preferably includes a plurality of arms and a cover attached to the arms. The left atrial anchor preferably also includes a plurality of arms and preferably does not include a cover. Preferably, the elongate member has a first end fixedly connected to the left atrial anchor and a portion, proximal to the first end, passing through the right atrial anchor. Preferably, the elongate member is flexible.

Abstract:

A closure device for sealing a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the heart includes a left atrial anchor adapted to be placed in a left atrium of the heart, a tether fixedly connected to the left atrial anchor and adapted to extend through the passageway of the PFO, a right atrial anchor adapted to be placed in a right atrium of the heart and moved along the tether, and a lock for securing the position of the right atrial anchor along the tether. The left and right atrial anchors preferably include a plurality of arms formed as loops and may include means for securing each arm in case of fracture in the loop. After the closure device is positioned, a cutting tool may sever the portion of the tether proximal of the right atrial anchor. The closure device can be retrieved during delivery, including by use of a snare catheter.

Abstract:

Safe and convenient methods and devices for inexpensively and rapidly treating pseudoaneurysms and other subcutaneous pools of blood utilize an apparatus with an applicator that can be grasped by a user at its proximal end and which has a distal portion that can be percutaneously inserted into a pseudoaneurysm. The distal portion has at least one retaining structure on at least one surface; the retaining structure(s) serve to collectively retain a clotting agent as the distal portion is inserted into the pseudoaneurysm. The clotting agent in the retaining structure(s) is exposed to blood in the pseudoaneurysm and initiates a clotting cascade. Since the clotting agent is in the retaining structure(s) and is not forcibly injected into the blood, the clotting cascade causes blood to clot at or near the surface of the applicator. The clot is associated with the applicator until the distal portion of the applicator is removed from the pseudoaneurysm. Removing the applicator causes the patient's tissue to wipe the clot off of the applicator so that the clot remains in the pseudoaneurysm.

Abstract:

The invention provides a device for contacting a surface of a tissue within a patient's body to determine a physiologic parameter of the patient. The device typically comprises a sensor responsive to the physiologic parameter and a probe housing the sensor. The probe is constructed to allow the sensor to be secured at a sensing area adjacent to a surface of a patient's tissue, without need for an adhesive and without disturbing the blood flow within the measurement region of the tissue. The device may also include a means for reducing interference in the sensing area. Preferably, the device further comprises an indicating means operably connected to the sensor for indicating an analyte quantity and/or concentration associated with the physiologic parameter. The invention also provides a method for determining a physiologic of a patient.
