    view source
  • US Patent:
    6611963, Sep 2, 2003
  • Filed:
    Oct 26, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    10/039823
  • Inventors:
Edwin Woo - Chula Vista CA
William Nyugen - San Diego CA
Thomas W. Fleming - San Diego CA
  • Assignee:
Bacon USA Safety, Inc. - San Diego CA
  • International Classification:
    A42B 106
  • US Classification:
    2209
  • Abstract:
A banded earmuff for protecting a workers hearing, includes a band ( ) formed of a wire frame ( ) and a flexible polymer sheath ( ) around much of the wire frame and a pair of pods ( ) that press around the wearers ears. The wire frame includes parallel wire lengths ( ) with opposite end parts joined by loops ( ). Each pod that seals around the ear has a mount ( ) that is coupled to the wire length end parts. Each mount has a groove ( ) with opposite sides that receive the pair of wire length end parts. This allows the pod to pivot on the wire length end parts, and to also slide along them. The sheath is molded with a pair of slits ( ), and middle length parts of the wire frame are installed through the slits into passages ( ) in the sheath.
  • Method Of Forming An In-Ear Device

  • US Patent:
    8343397, Jan 1, 2013
  • Filed:
    Mar 9, 2006
  • Appl. No.:
    11/371651
  • Inventors:
Edwin Woo - Chula Vista CA, US
  • Assignee:
Sperian Hearing Protection, LLC - San Diego CA
  • International Classification:
    B29C 39/18
  • US Classification:
    264 464, 264275
  • Abstract:
A method for forming a device () that fits into a person's ear canal, that carries sound from a pipe (B) of a speaker assembly (A) into the person's ear canal, and that blocks environmental noise. A first elastomeric material () is molded around an elongated core () to form a device body () with an outer surface that can seal to a person's ear canal. In one method, the first elastomeric material of the body is a soft foamable material and the core is a previously-formed tube () of a stiffer second elastomeric material, with the body bonded to the tube by being molded around it, either in a mold cavity or by extrusion through an extrusion head. In another method, the elastomeric material of the body is a non-foam, and the core () is a rigid pin that is removed from the earplug body after the earplug body has at least partially solidified.

  • US Patent:
    20050230181, Oct 20, 2005
  • Filed:
    Apr 7, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/100942
  • Inventors:
Edwin Woo - Chula Vista CA, US
  • International Classification:
    H04R025/02
    A61B007/02
  • US Classification:
    181135000, 181130000
  • Abstract:
A cord-earplug set () which includes a cord () that connects together a pair of earplugs (), the cord having a length that can be readily increased by a worker who pulls apart the opposite ends of the cord. The cord has an initial length much less than the usual two feet, such as 11 to 14 inches, and is constructed so the cord can be stretched by a worker pulling apart the cord ends with a force on the order of magnitude of 15 pounds. The cord is preferably formed of an elastomeric polymer of uniform diameter along its length so when the cord ends are pulled apart (by pulling apart the earplugs) to stretch the cord, the cord sections lengthen evenly to leave a cord of approximately constant diameter along its length.

  • US Patent:
    20060118124, Jun 8, 2006
  • Filed:
    Dec 1, 2004
  • Appl. No.:
    11/000649
  • Inventors:
Edwin Woo - Chula Vista CA, US
John Jenkins - San Diego CA, US
  • International Classification:
    A61F 11/00
  • US Classification:
    128864000
  • Abstract:
An earplug () that includes a soft foam body () and a stiffener () in the body, is produced by a method that has minimum steps and that results in an earplug of attractive design and that uses a minimum of material. One method includes molding an earplug body in a body cavity () while a mandrel () lies in the body cavity. After the foam material in the body cavity has at least partially solidified, the mandrel is removed, leaving an empty stiffener cavity () in the foam body (). With the body remaining in the body mold (), flowable stiffener material (A) is poured into the stiffener cavity of the body and allowed to solidify, to produce an earplug with a molded-in stiffener (). Another method, results in an earplug () with a stem () having a rearwardly-projecting stem portion (). This method includes molding a stem rear portion () in a stiffener cavity () while allowing stiffener material to project forward of the rear portion to form a stem free front portion (). The free front portion is projected into a body cavity () while foam material in the body cavity is still plastically deformable.
  • Earmuff For Noise Blocking

    view source
  • US Patent:
    59961236, Dec 7, 1999
  • Filed:
    Oct 16, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    9/174301
  • Inventors:
Howard S. Leight - Malibu CA
Edwin Woo - Chula Vista CA
  • Assignee:
Bacon USA Safety, Inc. - San Deigo CA
  • International Classification:
    A61F 1114
  • US Classification:
    2209
  • Abstract:
A noise blocking earmuff is described, which has a better noise blocking ability and which is more comfortable than prior earmuffs. The earmuff includes a cup-shaped shell (20), a cushion (22) that surrounds the open inner end of the shell and which presses against the head of the wearer, and an inside sound-absorber (26) lying in the shell. The cushion is formed of slow recovery material which has a rebound of no more than about 10 percent, to more comfortably and completely conform the cushion to the area of the wearer's head that the cushion presses against. The inside sound absorber includes a layer (50) of resilient felted foam for blocking higher frequency sounds, and a layer (52) of unfelted foam for blocking lower frequency sounds, to obtain a better overall noise blocking capability.

Killer Gets Life For 'Horrific" Ipswich Murder

Killer gets life for 'horrific" Ipswich murder

view source
  • Many in the courtroom, including four of the jurors who sat on the seven-week trial and returned to see the sentencing, were wiping away tears as Edwin Woo showed the judge photos of his father taken over the course of several decades.I wish my kids could have known my dad, said Edwin Woo, who went on to say he also wishes they could have known the people he and his brother were before the crime. We were far different people than we are now, he said.I wish the court and jurors didnt have to experience seeing the evidentiary photos, said Edwin Woo, who, along with his brother Adam, chose to remain in the courtroom even as some of the most disturbing images were shown.Edwin Woo was working in finance. It just didnt feel right going back to that life, he said. I decided to help put some bad people away and enable (his own children) to live in innocence as long as they could.Impressed with the work of Ipswich and state police detectives and the district attorneys office, Edwin Woo felt the need to pay it forward, and traded in his briefcase and suits for the boots and handcuffs of a police officer.
