Abstract:

A method, program and apparatus for rendering an image area in an electronic document are provided by means of a web browser having non-visual capabilities. The invention comprises parsing a web page and creating a document object model (DOM). The browser then determine if an image in the web page contains a “long description” attribute that names a URL address for a second web page. This second web page contains a long description of the image in the first web page. If the image does have this attribute, the browser creates a new subtree within the DOM of the first web page, and places the subtree adjacent to the image in the DOM. The subtree presents a visible and renderable hyperlink to the second web page containing the long description. The browser will then render the image and/or hyperlink. The image and hyperlink can be rendered audibly, tactilely, visually, or by a combination of these methods, depending on the needs of the user.

Abstract:

A method, program, and apparatus for providing a description of current position in an electronic document are provided. The invention first comprises parsing the electronic document into a parse tree. When the system receives a command from the user requesting current position in the electronic document, an algorithm performs a walk up the parse tree, from the current position to the root of the document. A position response, containing nodes in the walk up the parse tree, is constructed by the algorithm and reported to the user.

Abstract:

A method, program and apparatus for rendering an image in an electronic document by means of a non-visual browser are provided. The invention comprises rendering an image area within a web page, wherein the image area is associated with a hypertext link to an image document which contains content for the image area. When the browser renders a requested web page containing the image area and/or receives a selection of the image area, it retrieves the header element of the image and non-visually renders the information contained within the header. This information might include a title and national language designation, as well as other information inserted into the header by the web author. Non-visual rendering may be audible or by means of tactile feedback. In addition, non-visual rendering methods may be used in conjunction with traditional visual rendering, depending on the needs of the user.
