This invention relates to a topical composition for treating amino acid based substrates comprising a protected thiol compound having the formula where R is a functional group, S is sulfur, and Pr is a heterocyclic protecting group, and m is an integer between 1 and 100. The invention further relates to systems which comprise this protected thiol compound and an activating mechanism. The protected thiol compounds of the present invention may be used in hair care compositions, textile care compositions, cosmetic compositions, oral care compositions, skin care, nail care, laundry care, acne care and animal care compositions. Preferred embodiments of the present invention provide a modified UV absorber and a modified antioxidant, methods for making them and compositions conprising them.

Abstract:
A method of producing polysulfides comprising the step of adding elemental sulphur to an allicin-containing plant extract. In preferred embodiments, the plant extract is mechanically treated members of the genus , especially garlic. In further preferred aspects of the invention, the plant extract and sulphur mixture is heated, and the pH is controlled to allow manipulation of the polysulfide chain length. The present invention also relates to the combined use of sulfur- or selenium-containing compounds, and polymeric forms thereof, with other anti-angiogenesis agents, with various anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic agents as well as with radio-therapeutic agents in cancer, and with laser, photodynamic therapy for ocular-related disorders such as diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration.

A method for preparing 1,4-(Z,Z)-disubstituted-1,4-disulfurated-1,3-butadienes is disclosed. The butadienes can be further elaborated to provide 3,6-unsymmetrically-substituted-1,2-dithiins. Also disclosed are butadienes prepared by the method of the invention. These butadienes are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of antibiotic 1,2-dithiins.
