Abstract:
A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for extending the life of the battery within a Mobile Station (MS), while still allowing the mobile subscriber to use the MS. A new battery gapping feature can be implemented within both the MS and the cellular network. On the MS side, the feature will allow the subscriber to select the desired battery gapping mode, which is a combination of the stand-by mode with the MS power on and the stand-by mode with the MS power off. When in this battery gapping mode, the MS will alternate between power off and power on states depending upon the subscriber defined stand-by times for each of these states. On the network side, the MS will inform the network when the MS powers off, as well as indicate when the MS will be powered on again. Therefore, the network can inform calling parties of the next time that the MS will be reachable.

US Classification:

Abstract:
A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for preventing sub-optimal routing of new incoming calls to a mobile station (MS) that has been re-registered at a remote optimal Mobile Switching Center/Visitor Location Register (MSC/VLR) for an optimized call. When the MS is re-registered at the remote optimal MSC/VLR, the Home Location Register (HLR) associated with the MS stores an optimization indication indicating that the MS has been re-registered to the optimal MSC/VLR. Thereafter, when an incoming call to the MS is received during the time that the MS is re-registered, the HLR can handle the call based upon the optimization indication. For example, the HLR can forward the incoming call to a local voice mail box associated with the MS.

Abstract:
A method, system and apparatus in a wireless communications system selectively utilizes the Internet for the transmission of information. In a first embodiment, a subscriber can activate an Internet call forwarding (ICF) supplementary service (SS). From the subscriber's Mobile Station, an ICF message is transmitted to and stored in the subscriber's Home Location Register (HLR). The ICF message may optionally designate an Internet protocol (IP) address destination and may optionally activate other features pursuant to the data type received. For example, the ICF message may request that only fax/data calls or only calls that would otherwise incur a long distance charge be forwarded over/through the Internet. In operation, an incoming call to a Gateway Mobile Services Switching Center (GMSC) causes the GMSC to interrogate the called party's HLR. The information in the incoming call is then forwarded either over/through the Internet or over the PSTN based on the features activated by the ICF message.
System And Method For Performing Handovers Based Upon Local Area Network Conditions

Abstract:
A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for monitoring the activity within a local area network (LAN), and, if the LAN traffic levels are above a threshold level such that wireless speech quality drops below an acceptable level, a handover of mobile communications can be performed to either a non-LAN based umbrella cell, or to another cell associated with a different LAN. A monitoring application within an Access Node (AN) of the LAN monitors the LAN conditions through the LAN management system (LMS). Based upon the information obtained from LMS, the new monitoring application in the AN can request a handover to be performed from the LAN based network to either the non-LAN umbrella cell or to another cell associated with another LAN system. Thus, the speech quality of mobile communications can be maintained in periods of high LAN traffic, and the load on the LAN can be maintained without adding further congestion due to mobile communications.

Abstract:
A wireless control system (30, 70) for distributing electrical control signals to a plurality of controlled devices (36a, 36b, 36c, 74a and 74b), including an electronic control unit (ECU) (32, 72) adapted to communicate with one or more controlled devices (36a, 36b, 36c, 74a and 74b) and an induction loop (34, 73) coupled to the ECU (32, 72) and adapted to provide a magnetic field within the range of the controlled devices (36a, 36b, 36c, 74a, and 74b). Each controlled device (36a, 36b, 36c, 74a and 74b) includes an induction coil (42a, 42b, 42c, 76a and 76b) tuned to couple signals modulated within the magnetic field of the induction loop (34, 74). The controlled devices (74a and 74b) may include a sensor (82a, 82b) and may be adapted to send a status signal (84) to the ECU (72) via the induction loop (73).

US Classification:

Abstract:
A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for encapsulating header information associated with a Short Message Service (SMS) message within that SMS message, which can then be sent over a broadcast channel. This header information can contain, for example, additional information regarding the intended recipients of the SMS message. For example, a business with 100 employees may want to be able to broadcast a SMS message to all employees, but not to anyone else. Therefore, in this case, the header information can indicate "private" and include a unique user group identification (ID) code. A Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), or other memory, within each of the mobile terminals within the predefined group can contain a message application, which can compare the received group ID to a group ID stored in the SIM, and determine whether the message should be displayed on the mobile terminal.

System And Method Of Restricting Incoming Calls By Comparing The Forwarded-From Directory Number To A Directory Number Stored Within The Network

US Classification:

Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for selectively restricting only forwarded calls. Upon realizing that an incoming call was incorrectly forwarded, the terminal receiving the incoming call transmits to a telecommunications exchange an indication requesting activation of a subscriber feature that will restrict only forwarded calls from the terminal forwarding the call. The directory number for the terminal forwarding the call is retrieved from a register. That retrieved directory number is correlated with the directory number representing the terminal incorrectly receiving the forwarded call and the correlated data is stored at a database. Upon the receipt of the next incoming call, the telecommunications exchange determines that the call is forwarded. Then, the directory number associated with the forwarding party is compared against the data previously correlated and stored in the database. If the directory number associated with the forwarding party matches the directory number stored in the database, the call is rejected.
For a few months, we sat with what we had recorded thus far, listening ad nauseum and eventually realizing that there were a few musical loose ends to be tied up. so we went in for two additional sessions, with Eric Valentine and Mark Endert, respectively, for fresh perspectives and fresh ears. Tho
