Riccardo Muti and the CSO find a happy accord in Brahms

Finding the tops of his shoes more interesting than anything Muti and the orchestra might be doing, he missed many chances for true collaboration, including the lithe solo of principal oboe Eugene Izotov in the adagio and the sumptuous string playing throughout.

view source- The exposition repeats were observed in both the first and fourth movements of the symphony, and real bells were used in the "Witches' Sabbath," instead of the customary chimes. The "Scene in the Country," with fine solo playing from Eugene Izotov, oboe, and Scott Hostetler, English horn, came across as an atmospheric tone poem all by itself.
