  • International Classification:
    H04Q 720
  • US Classification:
    455466, 455423, 455422, 455516
  • Abstract:
A method and device(s) for increasing the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) user data rate between a mobile terminal and a basestation in a digital cellular mobile communications system. The method and device(s) use the same modulation scheme that is used for digital speech to encapsulate CDPD block data, specifically, the TIA/EIA-136 standard. The TIA/EIA-136 standard can accommodate more data than the GMSK modulation scheme that is typically used for CDPD block data. In order to encapsulate CDPD block data using the TIA/EIA-136 standard, an encoding step is performed on the sending end that includes constructing a CDPD block comprised of CDPD data, assembling an TIA/EIA-136 frame leaving the data fields of the frame empty, and placing CDPD block data in the data fields. The assembled TIA/EIA-136 frame is then sent using existing transmission code. To unpack the CDPD block data, a decoding step is performed on the receiving end that includes receiving the TIA/EIA-136 frame comprised of CDPD data in the data fields of the TIA/EIA-136 frame, and re-constructing the CDPD block from the data fields.

  • US Patent:
    6728323, Apr 27, 2004
  • Filed:
    Jul 10, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/612713
  • Inventors:
    Dayong Chen - Cary NC
    Evin Feli - Cary NC
  • Assignee:
Ericsson Inc. - Research Triangle Park NC
  • International Classification:
    H04L 2706
  • US Classification:
    375340, 714790
  • Abstract:
Methods, systems, baseband processors, mobile terminals and base stations are provided for decoding a punctured coded signal are provided. The signal is received to provide received symbols. Symbol positions associated with punctured locations are initialized to default symbol values. The received symbols and the default symbol values are error correction decoded to provide first signal estimates. Punctured location symbol estimates are generated based on the first signal estimates and the received symbols are combined with the punctured location symbol estimates placed in corresponding punctured locations. The combined received symbols with the punctured location symbol estimates are error correction decoded to provide second signal estimates.
  • Methods And Systems For Communicating Service Codes Over A Pstn Using Single Stage Dialing

    view source
  • US Patent:
    6748239, Jun 8, 2004
  • Filed:
    Dec 1, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/452650
  • Inventors:
    Evin Feli - Cary NC
  • Assignee:
Ericsson Inc. - Research Triangle Park NC
  • International Classification:
    H04B 138
  • US Classification:
    455557, 455560, 455 301, 455445, 37920711, 37922001
  • Abstract:
Methods, systems and mobile switching centers are provided that communicate a service code designation over a public switched telephone network without requiring two stage dialing. A received service code, for example a request for facsimile transmission services, is converted by the mobile switching center receiving the request to a pilot number. Pilot numbers are coherently (uniquely) associated with each of the possible service codes supported by the communication protocol (such as IS-136) but are in a form which, unlike the service codes, may be transmitted over the PSTN. The conversion may be provided, for example, by a look up table maintained by the mobile switching center. On the destination end, the receiving wireless network mobile switching center may then convert the pilot number to a service code and establish a connection supporting the requested service to the destination device. Accordingly, the wireless device providing the service code may request services for a communication including establishment of a communication channel including the PSTN in the same manner as where the service is provided entirely by wireless networks which support communication of the service codes.
  • Method And Apparatus For Distributing Traffic Load In A Wireless Packet Data Network

  • US Patent:
    6925059, Aug 2, 2005
  • Filed:
    May 9, 2001
  • Appl. No.:
    09/852332
  • Inventors:
Evin Feli - San Diego CA, US
Leonard Lee - Cary NC, US
Dayong Chen - Cary NC, US
  • Assignee:
Ericsson, Inc. - Research Triangle Park NC
  • International Classification:
    H04L012/26
  • US Classification:
    370235, 370477, 455453
  • Abstract:
Method and apparatus for distributing traffic in a wireless packet data network. A capacity flag which is sent on each RF data channel within a cell in a wireless packet data network is toggled between an asserted and an unasserted state according to the period of a timer. Transceiver terminals will only register for a channel while that channel's capacity flag is unasserted; therefore, transceiver terminals register with the various RF channels in a cell in a distributed fashion over time. The invention can be implemented by a computer program product or logic, or a combination of the two installed at the base station for a cell within a wireless data network such as a CDPD network.
  • Systems And Methods For Channel Selection For Facsimile Communication Over A Wireless Communication Network

  • US Patent:
    6459907, Oct 1, 2002
  • Filed:
    Jul 27, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    09/361940
  • Inventors:
    Evin Feli - Apex NC
  • Assignee:
Ericsson Inc. - Research Triangle Park NC
  • International Classification:
    H04Q 720
  • US Classification:
    455557, 455511, 455553, 37910001, 37910013, 37910017, 379 9309, 379 9315
  • Abstract:
Communication systems and methods are provided for selecting a channel for transmission of a facsimile utilizing a wireless communication network which has two different channel types available for wireless communications. In particular, systems and methods are provided which preferentially request one of the service types for a transmission of a facsimile but further provides for use of the alternate service type under conditions where a suitable channel is not available for the preferred facsimile support channel. More particularly, in one embodiment, when digital transmission services are not available, but analog services are available, facsimile transmission is provided over the analog channel rather than denying access to the wireless communication network for transmission of the facsimile.
