Abstract:

Utility meter readings generated at low sampling rates are disaggregated to identify consumer usage activities. Time intervals between readings can include a plurality of consumer usage activities. By employing a model which recognizes associations among consumer usage activities, effective disaggregation is possible using only aggregated consumption data and interval start times. Consumers and utility managers can design and assess conservation programs based on the disaggregated consumption usage activities.

Abstract:

A computer program product includes a tangible storage medium readable by a processing circuit and on which instructions are stored for execution by the processing circuit for performing a method. The method includes, upon receiving utility consumption data of a group of elements, defining clusters of elements by like geography and like utility consumption, evaluating a significance of each cluster by comparing an average utility consumption within the cluster with utility consumption of elements neighboring the cluster and determining from a result of the evaluating which clusters exhibit significant differences in utility consumption from the neighboring elements and defining those clusters as regional outliers.

Abstract:

A number of features for enhancing the performance of a communication system, in which data is transmitted between a base station and a plurality of subscriber stations located different distances from the base station, are presented. The power transmission level, slot timing, and equalization of the subscriber stations are set by a ranging process. Data is transmitted by the subscriber stations in fragmented form. Various measures are taken to make transmission from the subscriber stations robust. The uplink data transmission is controlled to permit multiple access from the subscriber stations.

Abstract:

A motion estimating method for determining a motion vector, using a bit rate-distortion technique in image compression. The motion estimating method includes the steps of obtaining a motion vector (x. sub. o, y. sub. o) which minimizes a predetermined error function, assuming a preferred motion vector (x, y), calculating the difference (x-diff, y-diff) between (x. sub. o, y. sub. o) and (x, y), obtaining the number of bits needed to encode the x-diff and y-diff, determining a bias based on a bias model according to the bit number, obtaining a final cost function value based on the difference between a cost function value and a bias, comparing the final cost function value with a predetermined allowance limit, determining the assumed motion vector (x, y) as a motion vector for a current macroblock and updating the allowance limit by using the cost function value, if the cost function value is smaller than the predetermined allowance limit and discarding the assumed motion vector (x, y) if the cost function value is not smaller than the predetermined allowance limit. The disclosed method is successful in increasing the compression rate.

Abstract:

A luminaire includes a speaker positioned at a first depth within a luminaire housing and capable of generating an audio output from a speaker diaphragm. The luminaire also includes a light source that generates a light output. Further, the luminaire includes a light guide assembly positioned at a second depth within the luminaire housing different from the first depth. The light guide assembly includes an acoustically transparent area positioned along a sound path from the speaker diaphragm, and the light guide assembly extracts the light output from the light source and directs the light output away from the luminaire.
