  • Rotating Eddy Current Roller Head For Inspecting Tubing

    view source
  • US Patent:
    49375245, Jun 26, 1990
  • Filed:
    Apr 24, 1989
  • Appl. No.:
    7/342210
  • Inventors:
Floyd A. Fasnacht - Forest VA
John C. Griffith - Lynchburg VA
Francis C. Klahn - Huddleston VA
  • Assignee:
The Babcock & Wilcox Company - New Orleans LA
  • International Classification:
    G01N 2790
  • US Classification:
    324220
  • Abstract:
A rotating eddy current roller head for inspecting tubing. A main body portion has a set of whisker wheels rotatably attached thereto which center the main body portion in the tube. A roller housing slidably mounted on the main body portion for radial movement relative thereto is caused to track the surface of the tube by opposing magnets mounted in the main body portion and roller housing. An eddy current coil is mounted in a coil holder which is pivotally mounted in an offset manner at the exterior end of the roller housing. A spring mounted in the roller housing biases the trailing edge of the coil holder against the surface of the tube to maintain the eddy current coil at a constant distance from the surface of the tube during inspection procedures.
  • Sludge Lance Wand

  • US Patent:
    47006625, Oct 20, 1987
  • Filed:
    Jun 13, 1986
  • Appl. No.:
    6/874257
  • Inventors:
Floyd A. Fasnacht - Forest VA
Frank C. Klahn - Huddleston VA
Bruce W. Schafer - Lynchburg VA
Charles E. Werner - Lynchburg VA
  • Assignee:
The Babcock & Wilcox Company - New Orleans LA
  • International Classification:
    F22B 3752
  • US Classification:
    122392
  • Abstract:
A sludge lance wand for cleaning once through steam generator tubes. A curved high pressure fluid feed tube has a plurality of feed tube extensions attached at one end and a first nozzle brace attached at the other end and in fluid communication with the feed tube. A second nozzle brace bolted to the first nozzle brace retains nozzle blocks in position between the two braces. The nozzle blocks are in fluid communication with the first nozzle brace and are provided with nozzle openings angled for cleaning the triangular-pitch positioned tubes in a once through steam generator. O-ring seals on each end of the nozzle blocks press fit against the braces to prevent leakage and insure that full fluid flow is directed through the nozzle openings.
  • Remotely Installed, Operated And Removed Manipulator For Steam Generator

    view source
  • US Patent:
    48040380, Feb 14, 1989
  • Filed:
    Jun 3, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/203612
  • Inventors:
Francis C. Klahn - Huddleston VA
Charles E. Werner - Lynchburg VA
Floyd A. Fasnacht - Forest VA
  • Assignee:
The Babcock & Wilcox Company - New Orleans LA
  • International Classification:
    B25J 904
  • US Classification:
    165 112
  • Abstract:
A remotely installed, operated and removed manipulator for steam generator includes a mast, an articulating arm attached to the mast, capable of operating in the bottom or top head of a once through steam generator or the head of a recirculating steam generator. Each embodiment can be remotely installed and removed. The manipulator provides precise access to tubes and can sustain substantial loads, so the apparatus can perform much of the tube work that must be performed inside a steam generator.
  • Contact Ultrasonic Transducer Head

    view source
  • US Patent:
    48687987, Sep 19, 1989
  • Filed:
    Nov 18, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/273667
  • Inventors:
Floyd A. Fasnacht - Forest VA
Michael G. Hacker - Rustburg VA
Orville L. Lindsey - Lynchburg VA
Thomas J. Smentek - Forest VA
  • Assignee:
The Babcock & Wilcox Company - New Orleans LA
  • International Classification:
    G01S 1500
  • US Classification:
    367104
  • Abstract:
A contact ultrasonic transducer head assembly. A stationary housing is adapted to be fitted to a remotely operated manipulator. A movable assembly slidably received by the stationary housing has a plurality of independently suspended ultrasonic transducers mounted thereon. A position encoder mounted in the movable assembly monitors movement within the stationary housing. A limit switch is used to electrically disable the remotely operated manipulator when the movable assembly slides a predetermined distance into the stationary housing to prevent damage to the transducers or the surface being inspected.
