Abstract:

The present invention is directed to a coating apparatus for a printing press. The apparatus includes an oscillating-metering roller having an internally disposed oscillation mechanism for delivering to a printed web a uniform fluid coating free from coater-imposed aberrations. The oscillation mechanism includes a translating means for translating a rotational movement into an oscillating movement, a velocity-modifying means for modifying the velocity of the rotational movement and a velocity-regulating means for providing a regulated, consistent velocity.

Abstract:

A liquid coating apparatus capable of applying a liquid coating fluid to a workpiece traveling over a press cylinder rotatably mounted in a printing press is provided. The coating apparatus includes an applicator means which communicates with the press cylinder to form a nip site when the coating apparatus is in a operative position. The applicator means transfers the liquid coating fluid from the coating apparatus to a workpiece that has been caused to travel through the nip site. The applicator means includes an endless coating plate belt driveably mounted upon two support rollers, thereby affording communication of the endless coating plate belt with a press cylinder which has limited access to its surface.

Abstract:

In offset presses in which the printing cylinder is provided with a tensioning spindle or reel rod the printing plate usually has a hooked edge which is inserted in a gap in the printing cylinder. The printing plate is then wrapped around the plate cylinder for insertion in the spindle within the plate cylinder. The tensioning spindle carries a slot for receiving an end of the printing plate. After insertion of the plate end in this receiving slot partial rotation of the spindle tightens the printing plate. A substantial amount of skill is required to fix a printing plate on a printing cylinder. It is not easy to align the gap in the printing cylinder with the slot in the tensioning spindle. Two hands are usually required. Herein the tensioning spindle end shaft carries a pinion capable of moving a rack associated with it when the tensioning spindle is partially rotated.
