Abstract:

The selective production of monoalkanolamines from alkylene oxides and ammonia over acidic inorganic catalysts such as acidic silica-aluminas, natural zeolites, acid clays and others is described. These catalysts have the advantage of providing good selectivity to the monoalkanolamine together with high alkylene oxide conversion and anhydrous operation which lowers operating costs. The catalysts are also relatively low cost and have high relative heat stability.

Abstract:

A tubular connection employing two separate non-concurrent threaded sections, each of which nearly decays, that is, runs out on a tubular surface, one on the outside diameter of the male tubular member, and one on the inside diameter of the female tubular member, thus providing a joint with nearly the strength of the tubular body in tension without the use of a coupling. The female tubular member is expanded through a cold swaging operation before being finished with the two threaded sections. Additionally, the connection features a torque stop and cylindrical seal in the middle of the two thread steps, where stresses may be kept low. The thread elements are reverse angle locking with S-shaped load flanks which reduce stress concentrations and provide a clamping action on the centralized seal. Because of this unique seal, the connection can take cyclic application of external and internal pressure without leaking, a feat non-coupled and non-upset connections of prior art have not achieved. This invention is a total optimization of tension efficiency, pressure integrity, and low stress compared to all other connections of its genre.

Abstract:

A system and method for customizing and/or tuning an operating system for a computer. In accordance with the inventive method, a plurality of input values are mapped to membership functions (or fuzzy sets). The input values relate to the status of the operating system, any tasks to be performed thereby, or any other parameter. A set of resource management rules are applied to generate an output corresponding to each input value in accordance with the membership function with which the input values are associated. In the illustrative embodiment, each rule is an `if-then` statement having a membership function as an antecedent and an output corresponding to the input value as a consequent. The rules are applied and the output defuzzified by an inference engine implemented in hardware or software. For each task to be customized or tuned, the resource management rules are developed by consulting with experts or an expert database to ascertain which resources should be managed and how so as to optimize the performance of the task.

Abstract:

An improved process for preparing olefin sulfonic acids and sulfonates by the reaction of sulfur trioxide and an olefin mixture having 14 to 16 carbon atoms per molecule which includes at least 30 percent by weight dimer olefins is disclosed. The olefin mixture and sulfur trioxide are mixed and reacted in a reaction zone of a continuous falling film reactor apparatus having a segregated cooling jacket, wherein the upper 1/8 to 1/3 of the reaction zone is operated and maintained at a constant temperature of between about 0. degree. to below about 27. degree. C and the lower 7/8 to 2/3 of the reaction zone is operated and maintained at a higher constant temperature of between about 25. degree. to about 40. degree. C. The acidic reactor effluent is then aged prior to neutralization.
