  • Abstract:
A mixing device and methods for making bone cement. A piston () of the mixing device is located in a first region () of a chamber () such that a mixing paddle () rotates to mix bone cement components at a first pressure to make a bone cement mixture. The piston () is moved passed an inlet opening () to be located within a second region () of the chamber () to compress the bone cement mixture to a second pressure greater than the first pressure to compress the bone cement mixture and make the bone cement. The bone cement may be transferred to a delivery device. The mixing device may include features that automatically initiate the compression and transferring phases after completion of the mixing phase, and further include features that automatically terminate the operational cycle. A three-step intuitive workflow utilizing the mixing device to improve efficiency in the surgical suite is also disclosed.

  • Filed:
    Apr 11, 2019
  • Appl. No.:
    17/045653
  • Inventors:
    - Kalamazoo MI, US
Gabriel Harshman - Portage MI, US
  • Assignee:
    Stryker Corporation - Kalamazoo MI
  • International Classification:
    A61B 17/88
    B05C 17/01
  • Abstract:
A system () for dispensing curable material. A lead screw () is rotatably fixed relative to a first control surface () and includes external threads (). A locking nut () includes internal threads () threadably engaging the external threads. An engagement feature () of the locking nut is adapted to be selectively engaged with an actuator () having a second control surface (). The threads provide for rotation of the locking nut about a translation axis when the actuator is in a disengaged position. Rotation of the locking nut permits the lead screw to move proximally along the axis and the compressed curable material to at least partially decompress within a dispensing volume. The threads further provide for distal advancement of the lead screw along the axis when the actuator is in an engaged position rotatably fixing the locking nut about the axis. Methods for operating and packaging the curable material dispensing system are also described.

  • International Classification:
    A61B 17/70
    A61B 17/34
  • Abstract:
Systems and methods for augmenting a vertebral body may include an optional access cannula, introducer device, and a stylet having a stylet shaft. The access cannula includes a hub portion and a cannula shaft extending from the cannula hub. The cannula shaft includes a distal end positionable within the vertebral body that defines a lumen along a longitudinal axis. The introducer device may be a telescoping or pivoting introducer device that is removably coupled to the hub portion of the access cannula. The introducer device controls the movement of the flexible distal portion of the stylet shaft and the flexible sheath from within the introducer device through the access cannula to within a target site in the vertebral body, wherein the flexible distal portion is moved from the constrained to the unconstrained state to displace cancellous bone within the target site.

A steerable assembly is directed through an access cannula such that a deflectable portion of the steerable assembly protrudes from the access cannula to within the vertebral body. The steering instrument is actuated from an operating tension mode in which a tension is placed on the control element of the steering instrument to a slack tension mode in which the tension on the control element is released. The steerable instrument may exert substantially zero lateral force on the deformable conduit in the slack tension mode. The steering instrument is moved relative to the deformable conduit positioned within the vertebral body. The steering instrument is actuated to move the steering instrument from the slack tension mode to the operating tension mode in which the deflectable portion may assume a curved configuration not substantially coaxial with a longitudinal axis of the access cannula.
