Active oxygen scavenging compositions and their use in packaging articles are disclosed. The compositions are all plastic materials and are typically deployed as at least one layer in a multi-layered wall of a packaging article such as a bottle, can or film. The compositions are usually used in conjunction with added transition metal catalyst to enhance the uptake of oxygen. Use of the compositions and package constructions disclosed serves to lengthen the shelf life of packaged oxygen sensitive substances and/or diminish the need for refrigeration of the packages.

Abstract:
Multilayered plastic bottles are disclosed having oxygen scavenging capacity sufficient to maintain substantially zero or near zero (depending on product requirements) presence of oxygen in the bottle cavity for the planned shelf life of the bottled product under specified storage conditions. The bottles feature a layer comprised of oxygen scavenger copolyester and may be used for bottling beer and other products requiring nearly total absence of oxygen for the duration of the target product shelf life.

Abstract:
Improved active oxygen scavenging packaging articles optionally further comprising SiO and/or EAA coatings are disclosed. Also improved active oxygen scavenging copolycondensates and their use in packaging articles are disclosed. Specifically disclosed are (1) the use of an oxidation moderator or controller (anti-oxidant) along with the copolycondensate scavenger and (2) post polymerization treatment of the copolycondensate substantially in the absence of oxygen. The improvements lead to increased oxygen consumption by the active oxygen scavenger and improved packaging characteristics for the active oxygen scavenging copolycondensates.

Monolayer packages comprised of an oxygen scavenging composition suitable for direct contact with package contents and recycle with other polyester bottles are disclosed. The oxygen scavenging composition is comprised of a modified copolymer which is comprised of predominantly polyester segments and an oxygen scavenging amount of oxygen scavenging segments. The polyester segments comprise segments derived from typical bottling and packaging polyesters such as PET and PEN. Use of these oxygen scavenging copolymers in bottles provides a clear and rigid monolayer bottle similar in appearance to unmodified polyester bottles. In a series of preferred embodiments, bottles fabricated with the oxygen scavenging copolymers of this invention are over 99 wt % PET and contain less than 50 ppb of extractable components.

Abstract:
Improvements in compositions, composites, and methods for construction of weather resistant and insulated roofs are disclosed. The type of roofs to which these improvements apply are typically known as built up roofs. Built up roofs feature a substrate as an inner layer normally adjacent to and attached to the exterior of an unimproved roof surface. This invention is directed to improved foamed resin substrates used in such roof constructions. Alternating layers of hot asphalt and roofing felt are applied to the foam substrate layer. In prior art roofs, the foamed resin substrates could not withstand the direct application of hot molten asphalt to the foam surface which necessitated use of an isolation layer between the foamed resin layer and the first asphalt layer. This invention discloses compositions, composites, and methods involving direct application of hot asphalt to specially formulated and thermally resistant polyester foam resin substrate layers at temperatures up to 500 F. These improved compositions, composites, and methods not only reduce labor and material costs but also produce roofs that score higher on standard tests used for rating such roofing constructions.

Abstract:
Concentrates produced by melt processing a branching agent and a polyester carrier are disclosed. The concentrates are useful in melt processing polyesters. The concentrates contain sufficiently high concentrations of a branching agent to minimize the formation of crosslinked compounds in the concentrates. Process for using the concentrate also are disclosed.
