As a young player in San Diego, Eppler idolized pitcher Greg Maddox. Epplers own fastball topped out at about 86 mph, and as a right-hander, he had to rely on being crafty to get ahead. He had to be resourceful to get beyond the high-school level of baseball.

Many will recall that during the 1990s, the American and National Leagues were known to have completely different strike zones, despite the protests of players in both leagues; many recall pitchers like Greg Maddox getting third-strike calls several inches off the outside corner on a routine basis,
the ball went in the cup, but jumped in the air with his arms raised when he got the official word it had bounced into the hole in front of the pin. He exchanged high-fives with playing partners Trent Dilfer and Greg Maddox, then slapped hands with fans along the ropes as he made his way to the green.
