A catalytic converter includes an inner liner housing a catalyst and an outer liner concentric with the inner liner. In one example, the liners are cylindrical tubes arranged between opposing dies during manufacture. The dies are moved toward one another to plastically deform the ends inwardly to form a conical flange. The forming process provides a sealed cavity between the walls of the inner and outer liners that insulates the hot catalyst housed within the inner liner from the environment exterior of the catalytic converter assembly. First and second tapered connecting tubes are welded onto the opposing ends of the catalytic converter in the area of the flange.
Expandable Gasket, Sealed Joint And Method Of Forming Same
An improved expandable gasket, sealed joint and method of forming a sealed joint which includes a gasket having at least 5% by weight unexpanded or unexfoliated graphite. The graphite material is preferably a mixture of expanded and unexpanded graphite compressed in a sheet or other shape affixed to a metal plate. The preferred composition is 5 to 70% by weight of unexpanded graphite and 30 to 95% expanded graphite, wherein the percentage of unexpanded graphite is controlled to provide the desired gasket expansion. A more preferred composition includes at least 10% by weight unexfoliated graphite or more preferably 15 to 50% by weight. The gasket is placed between the surfaces to be sealed and clamped in place. When the joint is heated, the unexpanded graphite exfoliates, causing the gasket to swell or expand, tightly sealing the joint. The expandable gasket of this invention is particularly suitable for automotive application, including head and exhaust gaskets which are subject to temperatures exceeding about 400. degree. C.

Abstract:
The improved high performance muffler is used to attenuate the sound waves in exhaust gases from internal combustion engines and the like and has a casing, which includes a closed volume defined by side walls, a top wall, a bottom wall and inlet and outlet end caps. The casing also has a defined exhaust gas-flow passageway, which extends between the end caps, which is bounded by upper and lower walls within the casing and the side walls, and which includes inlet and outlet chambers adjacent to the inlet and outlet end caps, respectively. Two spaced apart, gas-flow channels. A gas-flow director assembly, disposed between the side walls and the upper and lower walls, defines two spaced apart gas-flow channels. The gas-flow channels have a uniform, smooth cross-section, and their lengths are substantially equal. The gas-flow director assembly divides the exhaust gases flowing into the gas inlet chamber into two substantially unrestricted and equi-volume gas streams, and also defines an intermediate chamber, which communicates with the gas-flow channels, intermediate their ends, so as to permit the exhaust gases flowing in the channels to expand and mix for sound attenuation.
