Abstract:

A multilayer composite contains a gel coat layer, a laminate layer, and a barrier layer disposed between the gel coat and the laminate layer. The laminate contains from 40–80% by weight paste and from 20–60% by weight reinforcing fibers. The barrier coat also comprises a cured polyester resin, and contains reinforcing fibers shorter than those in the laminate layer. The barrier layer has sufficient flexibility to avoid cracking during demolding and handling. Preferably, the barrier layer exhibits an elongation at break of more than 1%, and more preferably about 2% or more. The resin of the barrier layer can contain up to about 25% by weight of the resin of an isophthalic acid based polyester resin. The composites can be made using an open tool molding process.

Abstract:

Composite articles are prepared by a spray up operation. In a first step, a gel coat is applied onto a mold surface which has been optionally pretreated with a mold release coating. Next, a barrier coat is applied over the gel coat in the mold and thereafter a laminate formula is applied over the barrier coat. The laminate contains from 40-80% by weight paste and from 20-60% by weight reinforcing fibers. In a preferred embodiment, the paste comprises 90% or more by weight resin, up to 5% filler, and an initiator composition capable of initiating cure at a temperature of 50 C. or lower. In a preferred embodiment, the multilayer composite has a thickness of about 15 mm or less, and is useful as an automobile body panel. The laminate preferably comprises a low shrink, low density glass fiber filled polyester resin. In a preferred embodiment, the paste of the laminate contains a dicyclopentadiene unsaturated polyester resin, polymeric hollow microspheres, and an initiator capable of initiating curing at room temperature or at temperature of 50 C. or less.

Abstract:

A throttle motion indicator device for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle having an induction system including a movable throttle for controlling flow through an induction passage and, an operator actuated accelerator pedal linkage, including a throttle rod, operatively connected to the throttle for controlling movement thereof, the indicator device including a spring positioned roller carried by the throttle rod in position to engage a detent means suitably positioned in the path of the roller as carried by the throttle rod to indicate to the operator a throttle position for improved fuel economy. With this device, the driver depresses the accelerator pedal until he feels a slight stiffening in the throttle movements which alerts him that he has reached a predetermined limit in acceleration rate to obtain good fuel economy. In an alternate embodiment, the detent means carries two detents to provide a signal to the operator of a range of throttle positions within an optimum acceleration range.

Abstract:

Internal combustion engine pistons are provided with aluminum bodies with highly insulative ceramic inserts cast in place in the upper combustion chamber defining wall. In each of the disclosed embodiments, the ceramic insert has tapered edges to dovetail the insert in place. A fibrous ceramic cushioning layer applied around the insert edge before casting distributes cooling stresses and allows limited relative expansion and contraction of the aluminum body and ceramic insert without overstressing either of the members. Abstract:

An exhaust reactor manifold having a reaction chamber formed by a hardened insulative ceramic liner which is supported within a protective housing. The liner walls are protected and insulated by compessible fibrous insulation. Springs and wedges in the housing act through the insulation blanket to load the liner walls in compression. Inlet and exhaust ports are provided through angled sealing surfaces of the liner which are urged by the compressive loading of the liner into engagement with mating surfaces of a ported mounting portion of the housing.

Abstract:

A fuel-air metering and induction system for an internal combustion engine including an electronic controlled pressurized carburetion system wherein a carburetor mounted on top of the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine is provided with one or more throttle valves to regulate the flow of induction fluid therethrough with a mass airflow meter including an air metering valve mounted on a shaft for rotation in the induction passage positioned upstream thereof, the air metering valve shaft having a cam thereon to actuate the metering rod of a fuel metering valve to control the delivery of fuel to a fuel atomizing nozzle discharging fuel into the induction stream immediately downstream of the throttle valves, the fuel metering valve being supplied with high pressure fuel from an electrically controlled, high pressure fuel pump, the output pressure and therefore volume of fuel delivered to the fuel metering valve being regulated as a function of electrical signals received which are indicative of various engine operating conditions and the mass airflow through the mass airflow meter.
