  • Flex-Rod, Curvature-Adaptable

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20080234691, Sep 25, 2008
  • Filed:
    Feb 21, 2007
  • Appl. No.:
    11/677568
  • Inventors:
Helmut Schwab - Princeton NJ, US
  • International Classification:
    A61B 17/70
    A61B 17/58
  • US Classification:
    606100
  • Abstract:
The design of a rod is disclosed that can serve in general structural applications or as an orthopedic spinal implant to retain formation or stimulate the reduction of deformity as occurring in scoliosis and kyphosis. Different from common solid rod implants, the here-disclosed rod is curvature-adaptable in three dimensions to the actual or desired curvature or shape of the spine and can be provided with elasticity in order to serve as support or agent for curvature correction. The curvature adaptation of the proposed rod can be done with minimal force before or after implantation by means of the simple rotation of always only one in a pair of wedge shaped washers inserted between rod segments while leaving full mechanical strength or elasticity to the rod after curvature adaptation. The rotation of the washers can be done by various means, either once before implant or subsequently in the implanted state.
  • Fiber Optical Sensor Device For Measuring A Physical Parameter

    view source
  • US Patent:
    44081235, Oct 4, 1983
  • Filed:
    Feb 2, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/230808
  • Inventors:
Georg H. Sichling - Corvallis OR
    Helmut Schwab - Princeton NJ
    Bernard Schwab - Princeton NJ
  • Assignee:
    Siemens Corporation - Iselin NJ
  • International Classification:
    G01D 530
    G01J 334
  • US Classification:
    250226
  • Abstract:
A fiber optical sensor device is provided for measuring a physical parameter. The sensor device contains a light source which emits a light beam into the end of a first light transmitting fiber. Light delivered from the output end of the fiber is directed to a light dispersing or selecting device such as a prism or an interference filter. This device disperses or splits the light transmitted by the first light transmitting fiber into its spectral components. The sensor device also contains a second light transmitting fiber. The input end of this second fiber receives the spectral components, whereby the components to be transmitted by the second fiber are selected dependent upon the physical parameter to be measured. The output end of the second fiber directs the selected component(s) to a light detector which measures the component intensity. The output signal of the detector is a measure of the physical parameter.
  • Method And Sensor Device For Measuring A Physical Parameter Utilizing An Oscillatory, Light Modulation Element

    view source
  • US Patent:
    43792260, Apr 5, 1983
  • Filed:
    Feb 2, 1981
  • Appl. No.:
    6/230868
  • Inventors:
Georg H. Sichling - Corvallis OR
    Helmut Schwab - Princeton NJ
    Bernard Schwab - Princeton NJ
  • Assignee:
    Siemens Corporation - Iselin NJ
  • International Classification:
    G01L 110
    G02B 514
  • US Classification:
    250231R
  • Abstract:
A light beam is transmitted by a fiber optical cable to a light modulation device such as a vibrating filament, bar or plate. This device or oscillator modulates the light intensity with a frequency which is dependent upon the physical parameter to be measured. Oscillations are sustained by a striking device. The modulated light beam is transmitted by a fiber optical cable from the measurement location to an evaluation location where the frequency of the modulated light beam is measured. The measured frequency is a function of the physical parameter.
