The best finish by a Japanese player in a mens major was a runner-up by Isao Aoki in the 1980 U.S. Open at Baltusrol, where he entered the final round tied with Jack Nicklaus and finished two back of the Golden Bear, who shot a 68 on the last day.

Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie not easy choices for Hall of Fame
Montgomerie is the only player to reach the Hall through the International Ballot without a major except for two Japanese players, Jumbo Ozaki and Isao Aoki. Ozaki won 94 titles on his home Tour and Aoki won 56 and one PGA Tour championship, which eluded Montgomerie through his career.
