Abstract:The present invention is directed to a method and automated loading mechanism for loading an apparatus. The apparatus of the present invention may include a means for automated loading, a means for automated transfer and/or a means for automated unloading of a container (e.g., a specimen container). In one embodiment, the apparatus can be an automated detection apparatus for rapid non-invasive detection of a microbial agent in a test sample. The detection system also including a heated enclosure, a holding means or rack, and/or a detection unit for monitoring and/or interrogating the specimen container to detect whether the container is positive for the presence of a microbial agent. Abstract:An incubator is fitted with an enclosure which surrounds the incubator. A cold air generation system supplies relatively cold air to a space formed between enclosure and the incubator. The system supplying the cold air can be embodied in a cart or base upon which the incubator sits. The enclosure is also placed on the base in a manner such that it substantially envelops the incubator. The top of the cart has openings for egress of cold air and return of air so that air may circulate in a closed loop. The incubator, cold air supply system and enclosure present a solution for incubating samples in a nominal 20-25 C. temperature environment. The enclosure, which is preferably insulated, may include a void or opening which exposes doors or other access device of the incubator, allowing direct access to the samples in the incubator while the rest of the incubator is enveloped by the enclosure.

Abstract:A local exchange with limited access to outside communication systems is coupled to a global satellite communication system by a mobile exchange unit. The mobile exchange unit (MXU) provides access to the local exchange by relating one channel in the global communication system to many possible destinations in the local exchange. Multiple circuits of the local exchange are associated with a single mobile number. A gateway associated with the MXU associates an available radio channel with the calling subscriber. Multi-stage dialing is eliminated and a subscriber can directly dial a number of a party in the local exchange.

Abstract:A digital telecommunication network (10) provides an audio processor (56) for each call in each external node (14). The audio processor (56) includes a vocoder and additional functions. At a source external node (14), the audio processor (56) detects DTMF events and encodes the events in a call-related signalling packet (26) which conveys a history of all DTMF activity at the source node over the past several seconds. In addition, the source node detects silence and configures a call-related signalling packet (26) to instruct a destination node (14) how to synthesize comfort noise. Speech is encoded as vocoded voice packets rather than call-related signalling packets. At a destination external node, the node's audio processor (56) distinguishes call-related signalling from vocoded voice. The audio processor (56) synthesizes voice, comfort noise, DTMF signals, and other signals in response to the call-related signalling packets and vocoded voice packets.

Abstract:A communication network (10) includes a constellation of satellites (12) in orbit around the earth. Gateways (14) communicate with the satellites (12), reside on the surface of the earth, and interface the network (10) to the local PSTN (18). User units (16) communicate with satellites (12) and provide communication services to users. A gateway (14) includes a mobile switching center (22), which connects half-calls, and an earth terminal controller (20), which occasionally overrides connections defined in the mobile switching center (22). When possible, communication paths connected at the mobile switching center (22) are intraswitched at a satellite (12) rather than being routed through the mobile switching center. However, when supplementary services are requested, the communication path is reconfigured back to the mobile switching center (22) so that additional signals may be inserted into the communication path.
