Abstract:

A submount substrate is used for the dual purposes of enabling simultaneous burn-in processing for a relatively large number of arrays of optical transmitters and enabling conventional dicing techniques to be used to form mounting-ready assemblies. In the preferred embodiment, the submount substrate is a silicon wafer that is specifically designed to provide connectivity between VCSEL arrays and burn-in equipment during the testing stage, but is also designed to be segmented and used in the final packaging stage. Because the submount is a silicon wafer, conventional integrated circuit fabrication techniques may be used to form conductive patterns that define array-receiving areas and that allow external circuitry to communicate with the various VCSEL arrays.

Abstract:

Waveguide based connector systems for optically coupling a fiber optic cable and an optoelectronic device and a method of fabricating the same are described. In one aspect, a connector system comprises an optical waveguide and an optical turn assembly. The optical waveguide has a first end and a second end. The first end of the optical waveguide is connectable to the fiber optic cable in an orientation aligned with a line-side connection axis. The optical turn assembly has a first optical port that is connected to the second end of the optical waveguide in an orientation aligned with a device-side connection axis, a second optical port that is oriented to communicate optically with the optoelectronic device along a device communication axis substantially intersecting the device-side connection axis, and an optical turn system that is operable to guide light along a path between the first optical port and the second optical port.

Abstract:

Biocompatible intraocular implants include a steroid and an auxiliary agent, where the auxiliary agent is present in an amount sufficient to lessen the severity of at least one side effect compared to the use of an otherwise identical implant lacking said auxiliary agent. The steroid and the auxiliary agent may be present on the same intraocular implant or on different implants. The steroid and auxiliary agent may be associated with a biodegradable polymer matrix, such as a matrix of a two biodegradable polymers. Or, the steroid may be associated with a polymeric coating having one or more openings effective to permit the steroid to be released into an external environment. The implants containing the steroid and an auxiliary agent may be placed in an eye to treat one or more ocular conditions while reducing the side effects otherwise accompanying steroid use.

Abstract:

Systems and methods for providing intelligent wireless access systems are presented. A microcell cellular architecture is provided in which a digital switch and controller are provided in conjunction with a number of intelligent radio ports. Each of the intelligent radio ports provides at least one voice channel to both the microcell and to the traditional wireless macrocell. Calls placed within the microcell, however, do not access the traditional public macrocell. This architecture enables the microcell to be easily integrated into an existing wire-based system such that calls placed to the wire-based system are simultaneously forwarded to a cell phone (thereby ringing at both phones using a single phone number). If the call is answered by the cell phone within the confines of the microcell (i.e., via an intelligent radio port rather than a conventional wireless base station), the call is handled as a wire-based call and the type of phone used to answer the call is transparent to the caller.

Abstract:

A multi-stage transport polymerization (“TP”) reactor useful for making a thin film for the fabrication of integrated circuits. One TP reactor has two distinct heating zones that facilitate the cracking of specific precursor materials. The multi-stage reactor comprises a first low temperature heating zone that heats incoming precursor materials to a temperature that is lower than the “cracking” temperature of the precursor. The second heating zone is maintained at a temperature useful for breaking the chemical bonds of a desired leaving groups in the selected precursor. Specialized heating bodies, which transfer heat to the precursor material in the low and high temperature zones, are used as elements of the invention that can simultaneously decrease the total volume and increase the inside surface area of the TP reactor. Chemistries of precursors used in the multi-stage reactor are also provided.
