Abstract:An expandable slip ring is used to secure attachment of an expanded tubular to a surrounding tubular. It features elongated generally axially oriented openings separated by narrow segments. As a swage is advanced within a tubular that has the slip ring outside it the narrow segments or tabs expand and can break but the ring is still held to its shape as the expansion progresses due to the integrity of other tabs that can subsequently break as the swage advances within the tubular that is surrounded by the slip ring. The integrity of the slip ring is enhanced for storage and run in while the expansion characteristics are more uniform as the ring retains some structural integrity during much of the expansion process.

Abstract:A tie back assembly that uses expansion for connection and sealing is disclosed. The male component does not have any wall portions removed to hold a resilient seal. A seal is an option as anchoring and sealing can be accomplished by the expansion alone. The pressure rating of the connection is not reduced by material removed to accommodate a seal. A variety of expansion techniques can be used and the expansion can be done in a single trip with the insertion of the tie back assembly into the receptacle or in a separate trip.

Abstract:An improved liner hanger comprises a mandrel having a piston housing and a plurality of spring slots disposed on the outer wall surface of the mandrel. Each spring slot having at least one spring disposed therein. The liner hanger also has a slip housing having a plurality of slips operatively associated therewith, a spring adjustment sleeve, and an adjustment sleeve ring. The location of the spring slots on the outer wall surface of the mandrel permits an increase in the number of springs utilized for setting the liner hanger. The spring adjustment sleeve and adjustment sleeve ring permit easy and safe assembly and disassembly of the liner hanger. Additionally, when actuated to move from its run-in position to its set position, springs, slip housing, and slips all move upward.

Abstract:An improved setting tool is provided for positioning, setting, and releasing a liner in a subterranean wellbore. The setting tool includes a plurality of fingers, each biased for locking engagement with axially spaced recesses provided in the wall of the tool mandrel axially above a lowermost position of the liner hanger connecting nut. The fingers are automatically forced upward into a release position when interference rollers move radially out of their respective recesses and separate a plurality of axially movable sleeves. Premature release of the liner is avoided by positioning the recesses in the mandrel such that the fingers are in a lock position when the tool string is either in tension or compression. The liner can be rotated after setting the liner hanger, so that the setting tool and drill string can thereafter be reliably retrieved by simple axial pick-up.

Abstract:A liner string has a hanger/packer near its upper end for connection and sealing to a surrounding tubular. A polished bore assembly is located above the packer and is pushed down after the liner hanger is set to slide over a metal to metal seal on the packer body. A surface string is then tied into the polished bore with another metal to metal seal against the polished bore. The liner string has just metal to metal seals going up to the surface for well pressure containment. Elastomer seals to the polished bore are eliminated. Placement of the polished bore above the packer body allows for a larger diameter polished bore so as to minimize restriction to future production flow. The liner top packer seal is also metal to metal as offered by Baker Hughes Incorporated under the ZX trademark.

Abstract:A liner hanger and packer are set at different times in a single trip without intervention. The running tool has a ball seat that accepts a ball for pressuring; up which results in movement of a mandrel with a magnet mounted to it past a valve triggered by the magnetic field. Potential energy is released to set the liner hanger. Further mandrel movement then releases the running tool once the liner is supported by the hanger. After a cement job that starts with confirmation of release of the running tool, the same magnet is moved past another valve adjacent the liner top packer. Another valve is triggered open to release potential energy and move parts that set the packer. The running tool is removed from the liner and brought to the surface.
