Abstract:

The present invention features geothermal systems with improved control strategies for efficient operation of multiple geothermal wells. In many embodiments, each well in a geothermal system of the present invention is operated in cycles. Each cycle includes a heat exchange phase followed by a thermal recovery phase. During a heat exchange phase, the well is engaged in exchanging heat with a heat pump. During a thermal recovery phase, the well is kept inactive for establishing thermal equilibrium with the earth. On many occasions, the geothermal system simultaneously operates a group of wells in a heat exchange phase to serve the building HVAC load, while maintaining other wells inactive for thermal recovery. The switching between different operational stages is regulated for each well to improve the overall performance of the system while satisfying the building demand.

Abstract:

A novel ground water heat transfer system is provided for low cost and high efficiency heat pumps and includes a deep well filled with water. An insulating sleeve which is smaller than the diameter of the deep well is placed in the center of the deep well so as to separate the well water into two portions. A water pump is suspended preferably below the water level and pumps the water from inside the insulating sleeve to the space between the insulating sleeve and the wall of the deep well in a manner which eliminates the dynamic lifting head. In an open loop system the water from the pump is first pumped to an heat exchanger and returned to the space between the insulating sleeve and the wall of the deep well. In a closed loop system the water from the water pump is pumped directly into the space between the insulating sleeve and the wall of the deep well and the fluid supplied the heat pump is pumped through a closed loop which is submersed in the space between the insulating sleeve and the wall of the deep well.

Abstract:

A system, method and computer program product is provided for mitigating the effects of burst noise on packets transmitted in a communications system. A transmitting device applies an outer code, which may include, for example, a block code, an exclusive OR (XOR) code, or a repetition code, to one or more packets prior to adaptation of the packets for transmission over the physical (PHY) layer of the communications system, wherein the PHY layer adaptation may include FEC encoding of individual packets. The outer coded packets are then separately transmitted over a channel of the communications system. A receiving device receives the outer coded packets, performs PHY level demodulation and optional FEC decoding of the packets, and then applies outer code decoding to the outer coded packets in order to restore packets that were erased during transmission due to burst noise or other impairments on the channel.
