He was honored as a Meinig Family Cornell National Scholar for his demonstrated leadership and nominated for the Ives Award for his academic success. James played two varsity sports for the Big Red (wrestling and lightweight football) and acted in the school's production of The Grapes of Wrath as well as student films.
