Abstract:
A low-expanding adhesive composition comprising: a diisocyanate, a surfactant and an activator is provided. The provided adhesive composition cures upon exposure to water. The adhesive composition can be used to bond wood, metal, glass, ceramic, leather, acrylic, PVC and combinations thereof.
A structural reinforcement system for a tubular member, comprising: a carbon fiber shell attached to the tubular member with adhesive, wherein the carbon fiber shell comprises a carbon fiber fabric sandwiched between non-carbon bidirectional fabric, wherein the carbon fiber fabric is largely unidirectional along the y-axis along the tubular member; a unidirectional or biaxial fiber reinforced polymer hoop or helical wrap connected to the carbon fiber shell, wherein the fibers of the hoop wrap are largely unidirectionally oriented in the hoop direction; and optionally a protective wrap or coating around the system is provided.
An existing vertical monopole tower is reinforced by a plurality of vertically extending metal reinforcing members in the form of elongated channel members or angle plate members or ribbed plate members. The reinforcing members have longitudinally spaced holes which align with vertically spaced holes in the tower wall, and blind fasteners extend through the aligned holes to secure the reinforcing members to the tower. The fasteners provide for transferring only tensile forces or tensile and shear forces to the reinforcing members. Vertically aligned reinforcing members have adjacent end portions spliced together by splice plates and blind fasteners, and the splice plates are fastened to the web portions of the channel members or the ribs of the rib plate members or the wing portions of the angle plate members. Shear plates and pin assemblies may also be used to transfer shear forces and in splicing vertically aligned reinforcing members.
Method For Increasing Structural Capacity Of Towers
An improved method of structurally upgrading existing steel monopole or lattice tower structures insitu consists of bonding fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials to the existing steel member or component surfaces. A structural adhesive is used to bond the composite material directly to steel and transfers the load between the two materials in shear. Steel includes galvanized steel, steel alloy, cortan steel and other painted or unpainted structural steel. Tower includes a monopole tower or a utility or transmission tower made of plate steel or a lattice of structural members or components. The result is a synthesized tower structure that is stronger and stiffer than the original steel tower.

Abstract:
A system and method for strengthening elongated members of a tower section is provided. A tower section includes a plurality of elongated members. At least one reinforcing member is employed to reinforce the tower section. A structural adhesive is applied to the elongated members and the reinforcing members. The reinforcing members are pressed or otherwise placed against corresponding elongated members. The structural adhesive is cured to thereby permanently attach the reinforcing members to the corresponding elongated members. The reinforcing members can be clamped, bolted or otherwise secured to the corresponding elongated members during curing of the structural adhesive.
A system and method of strengthening members of a tower comprises providing a tower including at least one tower member, and at least one reinforcing member. A structural adhesive is applied to the tower members and the reinforcing members. The reinforcing members are placed against corresponding tower members. The structural adhesive is cured to thereby permanently attach the reinforcing members to the tower members. The reinforcing members are secured to the corresponding tower members preferably by bolts while the structural adhesive is curing.
An adhesive impregnated carrier comprising a carrier impregnated with uncured adhesive resin is provided. The carrier material and overall impregnated carrier can be any desired thickness, as further described herein. Also provided is a method of bonding materials together comprising: positioning an uncured adhesive impregnated carrier between materials to be bonded; and curing the adhesive impregnated carrier, wherein the materials are bonded.
