Abstract:

An optical system for imaging an array of light sources includes an array of microlenses disposed to intercept light from respective light sources in the array of light sources to reduce the divergence angles of light emanating from the light sources, a first array of lenses (sometimes referred to as minilenses), a second array of lenses (minilenses), and an additional array of microlenses disposed to intercept and focus light from the second array of lenses. Each lens in the first array is sized to intercept light from a respective sub-plurality of the microlenses, and each lens in the second array intercepts and focuses light from a respective lens in the first array. The first and second arrays of minilenses are preferably configured to define a doubly-telecentric imaging system. Each microlens in the additional array intercepts and focuses light that originated from a respective light source in the array of light sources and passed through a respective microlens in the first-mentioned array of microlenses.

Optical systems are corrected for a variety of aberrations by a microlens array where an optical property of the individual microlenses varies as a function of position in the array. For example, the microlenses can be configured so that the focal length varies to correct field curvature. Representative environments for the microlens array may be characterized by a pixellated source (array of individual sources) in an object plane or a pixellated detector (array of individual detectors) in an image plane, or both.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a write element for use in magnetic data recording system such as a computer disk drive. The write head utilizes the advantageous properties of high magnetic moments while overcoming the corrosion problems engendered by such materials. The write element includes a magnetic yoke constructed of first and second magnetic poles joined to one another at a back gap. While the majority of the poles are constructed of a high magnetic moment material a layer of relatively low magnetic moment material is provided on the first pole at the back gap portion of the first pole. The relatively low magnetic moment material prevents corrosion of the first pole during subsequent manufacturing of the write head. An electrically conductive coil passes through the magnetic yoke and is insulated there from. By passing an electrical current through the electrical coil, a magnetic flux is generated in the yoke.

Abstract:

A method of manufacturing a photomask for the production of dual depth features on substrates, and the photomask so manufactured, wherein the method of manufacturing the photomask is comprised of the steps of: (1) coating a substrate which transmits at least two selected wavelengths with: a) an optical filter material which prevents the transmission of at least one of the wavelengths, b) an opaque masking material, and c) a dual tone photoresist; (2) using a single mastering tool to selectively expose areas of the coated substrate to one of the wavelengths; (3) developing the photoresist; (4) etching the exposed masking material and optical filter material; (5) exposing the remaining coated substrate; (6) developing the remaining photoresist; (7) etching the exposed surface; and (8) stripping away the remaining photoresist.

Abstract:

A cordless system comprises a laptop computer with a modem connected to a modem data port on a cordless telephone handset. A direct sequence spread spectrum RF link is established between the cordless telephone handset and a base station. Both the telephone network and a desktop computer with a modem are connected to the base station. When the cordless telephone handset detects that the laptop computer wants to go off-hook, a selection signal is also sent by the cordless telephone handset to the base station to indicate whether the call is to be directed to the telephone network or the desktop computer. When the base station detects that the desktop computer wants to go off-hook, a selection signal is also sent by the desktop computer to the base station to indicate whether the call is to be directed to the telephone network or over the RF link to the laptop computer. Incoming calls from the telephone network are directed to the desktop computer by the base station with a ring indication going to the cordless telephone handset. If the laptop computer answers the ringing, the cordless telephone handset indicates an off-hook condition to the base station and the base station routes the incoming call over the RF link to the cordless telephone handset and the laptop computer.

An optical data storage device having a substrate has guide ridges, or reverse grooves, in a concentric or spiral shape formed thereon, and disposed in a plane parallel to and disposed from the substrate surface. The device further has pits formed approximately midway between the guide ridges and disposed in the substrate and having bottoms below the plane of the substrate surface. A method for manufacturing the optical data storage device having both address pits and guide ridges is disclosed. Abstract:

A partially blocking data cache having improved microprocessor performance while maintaining data consistency between external memory and cache memory. The data cache of the present invention is used in a computer system and is partially blocking in that this cache will block the execution of any store instructions subsequent to an outstanding load instruction that missed the cache. The present invention offers increased microprocessor efficiency by allowing execution of subsequent load instructions while less than a predetermined number of preceding load instructions are still outstanding. The present invention utilizes a counter within the data cache unit to track the number of outstanding load misses. The present invention provides increased performance without undue or overly complex modifications to existing caching systems. The present invention operates advantageously within a computer system having a relatively large number of registers associated with the microprocessor such that store instructions represent a relatively small number of the instructions executed by the microprocessor.

Abstract:

Media content can be synchronized across multiple participant devices. A set of participant devices may request access to stream media content from a content delivery network. Each participant device can send information relating to the playback of the media content to a coordination server. The coordination server can determine a synchronized time for playback of the media content such that all participant devices playback the media content simultaneously. The coordination server can instruct each participant device to playback the media content according to the synchronized time.
