According to an approach for configuring Wi-Fi devices, a wireless access point changes its mode of operation from a normal operating mode to a configuration operating mode to configure one or more Wi-Fi devices. When operating in the configuration operating mode, it is more difficult for an eavesdropper to intercept messages between the wireless access point and the Wi-Fi devices being configured. Upon completion of the configuration process, the wireless access point changes its mode of operation from the configuration operating mode back to the normal operating mode. This approach reduces the likelihood of an eavesdropper intercepting configuration messages exchanged between a wireless access point and one or more Wi-Fi devices during the configuration process. The approach also allows automated configuration of Wi-Fi devices and reduces the amount of user interaction required to configure Wi-Fi devices.
Techniques and systems for automatically configuring devices to interact with “legacy” wireless access points (“WAPs”) are disclosed. According to one technique, a user programs a WPS-enabled WAP with the configuration information of a “legacy” WAP. This makes the WPS-enabled WAP “aware” of the “legacy” WAP. When any other user brings his device within discovery range of the WPS-enabled WAP, the WPS-enabled WAP sends, to that device, a list of the WAPs of which the WPS-enabled WAP is aware. The device's user selects one of the WAPs (e. g. , a “legacy” WAP) from the list. The WPS-enabled WAP receives the user's selection and sends, to the device, the configuration information for the selected WAP. The user's device configures itself, using the configuration information, to interact with the selected WAP. Thereafter, the user's device can access a network through the selected WAP, even if the selected WAP is a “legacy” WAP.
Techniques and systems for allowing a client to interact with a Microsoft Windows Server via a proxy authentication server are disclosed. Instead of engaging in the NTLM authentication protocol with a Microsoft Windows Server directly, a client may interact with a proxy authentication server. The proxy authentication server may perform all of the necessary NTLM interactions with the Microsoft Windows Server. Thus, the proxy authentication server authenticates itself with the Microsoft Windows Server, and acts as the client's agent. Because the client does not directly interact with the Microsoft Windows Server, the client does not need to authenticate itself with the Microsoft Windows Server; instead, after the proxy authentication server authenticates itself with the Microsoft Windows Server, the client can transact the client's business with the Microsoft Windows Server through the authenticated proxy authentication server. The proxy authentication server can act on behalf of multiple different clients in a network.

Systems and methods are disclosed for enabling remote management of printing devices and for providing access control of printing devices within secure health policy based networks. A printing device transmits device status information to a status server and operational health information to a compliance server. The compliance server receives a health policy for the network from the status server. The compliance server evaluates the operational health information using the health policy and configures the printing device for operations within a secure portion of the network if the operational health information is in compliance with the health policy.
