Abstract:

The invention provides in some aspects a transport system comprising a guideway with a plurality of propulsion coils disposed along a region in which one or more vehicles are to be propelled. One or more vehicles are disposed on the guideway, each including a magnetic flux source. The guideway has one or more running surfaces that support the vehicles and along which they roll or slide. Each vehicle can have a septum portion of narrowed cross-section that is coupled to one or more body portions of the vehicle. The guideway includes a diverge region that has a flipper and an extension of the running surface at a vertex of the diverge. The flipper initiates switching of vehicle direction at a diverge by exerting a laterally directed force thereon.

Abstract:

A power converter, for accepting power from a source and delivering power to a load, comprises conversion circuitry including a first side coupled to the source and a second side isolated from the first side and coupled to the load, energy storage circuitry, connected to the first side of the conversion circuitry, for storing energy at a voltage higher than the voltage of the source, and a switch arranged with respect to the conversion circuitry and energy storage circuitry to allow energy to be delivered from the source to the energy storage circuitry and a quantum of energy to be delivered to the second side of the conversion circuitry during a time that the switch is closed. Energy can be delivered to the energy storage circuitry and the quantum of energy delivered to the second side of the conversion circuitry during less than the entire time that the switch is closed. A method for use in converting power from a source to a load comprises closing a switch, receiving energy from the source during at least a portion of the time that the switch is closed for storage in a first circuit at a voltage higher than the voltage of the source, and transferring, during at least a portion of the time that the switch is closed, a quantum of energy stored in the first circuit to a second circuit that is coupled to the load and is isolated from the first circuit.

The flipper, which can be equipped for full or partial deployment, is partially deployed in order to effect alteration of the vehicle angle as the vehicle enters the merge.

Abstract:

Synchronization of multiple vehicles in an independent cart system to reduce spacing and increase throughput designates one of the movers as a leader and at least one additional mover as a follower, defining a chain of vehicles. A motion command for the chain is provided to a controller for the leader, and the controller generates a motion profile. The controller passes this motion profile to a controller for each of the follower movers. If the follower is unable to maintain the motion profile for the leader, the controller for the follower generates a message to the controller for the leader indicating a modification to the motion profile is required. The controller for the leader modifies the motion profile and forwards the modified motion profile to controllers for each follower. If all movers are following the modified profile, the controller for the leader may return to the original motion profile.

Abstract:

Aspects of the invention provide a transport system powered by short block Linear Synchronous Motors (LSMs). The use of short blocks allows vehicles to move under precise control even when they are in close proximity to each other. The design allows the vehicles to be propelled and guided while negotiating sharp turns and negotiating merge and diverge switches. A coreless LSM can be used to create propulsive force without attractive force so as to allow a relatively high drag vehicle suspension, such as a vehicle sliding on a smooth surface.
