  • Interferometric Modulator For Optical Signal Processing

    view source
  • US Patent:
    55836364, Dec 10, 1996
  • Filed:
    May 3, 1994
  • Appl. No.:
    8/237186
  • Inventors:
Jeffrey A. Bulow - Syracuse NY
  • International Classification:
    G01B 902
  • US Classification:
    356345
  • Abstract:
An interferometric modulator uses a beamsplitter to produce deflected and transmitted light beams onto mirrored surfaces of a piezoelectric crystal pair, one piezoelectric crystal being driven by a modulating voltage signal, whereupon the light beams are reflected back to the beamsplitter to produce a modulated optical output signal, with the modulator being especially adaptable for use as a digital photonic clock, as a pulse width/amplitude modulator, and as a bistable optical memory cell. A self-switching optical digital clock generates a digital signal without piezoelectric crystals by using analog optical feedback signals of precise time durations. Interferometric modulation is also used to amplify a sinusoidal electromagnetic signal, to regulate signal amplification, and to create logic functions.
  • Light Valve Projection System With Improved Writing Control And Reduced Fluid Degradation

    view source
  • US Patent:
    45332169, Aug 6, 1985
  • Filed:
    Jun 13, 1983
  • Appl. No.:
    6/503441
  • Inventors:
David A. Orser - North Syracuse NY
Jeffrey A. Bulow - Syracuse NY
  • Assignee:
General Electric Company - Portsmouth VA
  • International Classification:
    G02B 520
    H04N 574
  • US Classification:
    350361
  • Abstract:
A light valve projection system is disclosed in which information is impressed on a light modulating fluid (32) overlying a disk (22) wherein incident light from a lamp (10) is modulated by the information and projected onto a viewing surface (33). The fluid layer includes a raster area within which information is written by the deposition of electric charge along scanning lines so as to form diffraction gratings which are parallel to the plane of the disk. An improvement in the operation of the system is achieved by interposing a sharp-cutoff filter between the light source and the light modulating fluid. In a preferred embodiment, the sharp-cutoff filter is part of the dichroic filter plate (26). The use of the sharp-cutoff filter allows the operation of the light valve at high brightness levels while reducing attendant degradation effects of the light modulating fluid and improving the ability to control the desired writing parameters of the light valve.
