New metal persulfido compositions of matter are described. :In one embodiment the metal is molybdenum and the metal persulfido complex mimics the structure and function of the triangular active edge site fragments of MoS, a material that is the current industry standard for petroleum hydro desulfurization, as well as a promising low-cost alternative to platinum for electrocatalytic hydrogen production. This molecular [(PY5W)MoS] containing catalyst is capable of generating hydrogen from acidic-buffered water or even seawater at very low overpotentials at a turnover frequency rate in excess of 500 moles Hper mole catalyst per second, with a turnover number (over a 20 hour period) of at least 19,000,000 moles Hper mole of catalyst.

A composition of matter suitable for the generation of hydrogen from water is described, the positively charged cation of the composition having the general formula [(PY5W)MO], wherein PYSWis (NCXYZ)(NCH)CW, M is a transition metal, and W, X, Y, and Z can be H, R, a halide, CF, or SiR, where R can be an alkyl or aryl group. The two accompanying counter anions, in one embodiment, can be selected from the following Cl, I, PF, and CFSO. In embodiments of the invention, water, such as tap water containing electrolyte or straight sea water can be subject to an electric potential of between 1.0 V and 1.4 V relative to the standard hydrogen electrode, which at pH 7 corresponds to an overpotential of 0.6 to 1.0 V, with the result being, among other things, the generation of hydrogen with an optimal turnover frequency of ca. 1.5 million mol H/mol catalyst per h.

It can be effectively used to separate Ofrom Nand in a number of additional separation applications based on selective, reversible electron transfer reactions. In addition to being an effective Oseparation material, it can be used for many other processes, including paraffin/olefin separation, nitric oxide/nitrous oxide separation, acetylene storage, and as an oxidation catalyst.

Various embodiments of the invention disclose that the uptake of LiOPr in Mg(dobdc) (dobdc=1,4-dioxido-2,5-benzenedicarboxylate) followed by soaking in a typical electrolyte solution leads to a new solid lithium electrolyte Mg(dobdc).0.35LiOPr.0.25LiBF.EC.DEC. Two-point ac impedance data show a pressed pellet of this material to have a conductivity of 3.1×10S/cm at 300 K. In addition, the results from variable-temperature measurements reveal an activation energy of approximately 0.15 eV, while single-particle data suggest that intraparticle transport dominates conduction.

Abstract:
The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CORR) provides opportunities to synthesize value-added products from this greenhouse gas in a sustainable manner. Efficient catalysts for this reaction are provided that selectively drive COreduction over the thermodynamic and kinetically competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in organic or aqueous electrolytes. The catalysts are metal-polypyridyl coordination complexes of a redox non-innocent terpyridine-based pentapyridine ligand and a first-row transition metal. The metal-ligand cooperativity in [Fe(tpyPY2Me)] drives the electrochemical reduction of COto CO at low overpotentials with high selectivity for CORR (>90%).
