Abstract:

A system for detecting hazardous agents is based on cellular telephone networks. The cellular telephones in public circulation have at least one detector for detecting at least one hazardous agent and broadcast alarm packets upon detecting the hazardous agent. A computer or computer network interconnected with telephones by the cellular telephone network processes the alarm packets and sets an alarm condition for the hazardous agent in a vicinity of the cellular telephone by calculations based upon alarm packets from other telephones with detectors for the hazardous agent in the vicinity. A map of the contaminated area is also created.

Abstract:

A data protocol compatible with ATM data transmission systems that provides a frame format that allows for ATM cell transmission in a low speed, high noise link such as a radio link and further provides for reliable radio data communication in the ATM format through the provision of timing and control information. A TDMA implementation of the present protocol is suitable for reliable data communication between a single headend station and a plurality of mobile substations. The protocol format is such that simple and easy interconnection with standard ATM data communications systems can be made to allow for wide distribution of relevant data. The protocol is suitable for implementation in either software or low cost hardware.

Abstract:

A system and method for assisting a visually impaired individual provides a guide robot that can guide a user to a desired destination. The guide robot includes at least one camera device, at least one distance measurement device, a global positioning system (GPS) module, and a controller. The camera device, the distance measurement device, and the GPS module are used to capture data of the area surrounding the guide robot in order to track and detect path obstacles along an intended geospatial path. The intended geospatial path is virtually generated in accordance to a set of navigational instructions that can be provided by the user. The user can provide the navigational instructions through a set of voice commands and/or through a computerized leash. The guide robot can notify the user of the path obstacles along the intended geospatial in order to safely guide the user to the desired destination.
