Co-written by Rickman and newcomers Jeremy Brock and Alison Deegan, A Little Chaos falls short of greatness. Its more Thomas Hardy wannabe than Choderlos de Laclos. But its production values are spectacular, and for those of you longing for the resurrection of Rickmans Professor Severus Snape, n

MOVIE REVIEW: 'The Eagle' suffers from a lack of talons
But by that point, the script by Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland, the 2008 Brideshead Revisited) has gone haywire, regularly and confusedly flashing back to Marcus childhood (I think) and glimpses of an emerald ring that of course turns out to belong to ... nope, wont give that one away, either.

'Eagle' review: Channing Tatum is bland, but battle scenes are well staged
Tatum's profile is a Roman coin come to life, but little else about his bland performance is lively. Bell ("Billy Elliot") could do more with his sullen scrappiness, but Jeremy Brock's script, based on a novel, keeps Esca a toadying servant whose fate owes less to strategy than to dumb luck and blind trust.
The screenplay was adapted by Jeremy Brock from Rosemary Sutcliff's 1954 novel "The Eagle of the Ninth," a tale written for young readers that simply does not ripen well for the modern grown-up audience at which the film is aimed.

Channing Tatum, Donald Sutherland, Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, Tahar Rahim
But Jeremy Brock's screenplay dawdles while Macdonald's direction (The Last King of Scotland) is strangely pushy, insisting on an emotional depth that isn't really there. Through it all, Tatum tries like crazy to act. His eyes pinch. His brow scrunches. Most of all, he clenches his jaw, little creases of muscle flexing below his ears as he labors to emote. It's a tic, much like Clooney's old fondness for head-bobbing, and he should dump it before it hurts his career.
The screenplay by Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland) apparently takes liberties with the 1954 novel The Eagle of the Ninth by British author Rosemary Sutcliff and may be to blame. Some are likely to recognize that last years R-rated Centurion from Brit splatpack auteur Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) was similar and much better.
