Abstract:
A method for forming microcellular foams that causes the material to expand uniaxially during the foaming process, and a method for forming objects from the foam. Liquid crystal polymers or polymers having a planar crystalline structure are saturated with a fluid, normally a gas such as carbon dioxide. The ambient conditions are changed such that the fluid is in a supersaturated state, and the material is brought to near its glass transition temperature to induce the formation of nonspherical elongated gas-filled cells. A process for making objects, such as transducer diaphragms, from microcellular foams includes the step of forming the objects prior to the foaming process.

Abstract:
A bistable structure provided by the invention is characterized as including a deflection element that has mechanically constrained end points and a compliant span between the end points that is substantially free to deflect between two stable positions when a force is applied at a point along the span. The deflection element span is provided, as-fabricated, curved in one of the two stable positions and in a mechanically unstressed condition along the length of the span. The as-fabricated curve of the deflection element span includes a curve maxima at a point along the span length that is at least about of the span length from the end points of the span. The deflection element span is constrained to substantially prohibit development of a second bending mode that is characteristic for the span as the element deflects between the two stable positions.
Methods And Compositions For Treating Conditions Involving Abnormal Angiogenesis
The present invention features methods and compositions for preventing, reducing, or treating hypoxia and pathological disorders involving abnormal angiogenesis (e. g. , conditions involving decreases or increases in blood flow, respectively). Where an increase in angiogenesis is desired, the mammal being treated for an ischemic condition is provided with Related Transcriptional Enhancer Factor-1 (RTEF-1; as a recombinant polypeptide or as an expression vector) sufficient to increase expression of VEGF, FGFR, or COX-2. This results in a concomitant increase in angiogenesis. Conversely, a mammal being treated for a hypervascular condition is administered a composition that reduces the levels of RTEF-1, thereby reducing the expression of VEGF, FGFR, or COX-2, which results in a decrease in angiogenesis. Also disclosed are screening methods that make use of RTEF-1 for the identification of novel therapeutics for the treatment, prevention, or reduction of pathological disorders involving hypoxia or abnormal angiogenesis, namely, ischemic or hypervascular conditions.

Abstract:
An instrument for enabling a precise determination of the force-displacement characteristics of a compliant structure, including both in-plane and out-of-plane structure deflection, is provided by the invention. The instrument includes a fixture that is oriented for constraining an end of the compliant structure with respect to mechanical ground as the force-displacement characteristic is determined. A mechanical probe of the instrument is disposed relative to the fixture to enable pushing of the probe against a free end of the compliant structure. A mechanical stage is provided, including a support for the probe, and being free with respect to mechanical ground to advance the probe relative to the fixture. This enables pushing of the probe against the free end of the compliant structure. A reference element is connected to the stage, and a displacement transmission element is disposed relative to the mechanical probe and the compliant reference element to transmit deflection of the compliant structure, produced by pushing of the probe, to the compliant reference element. A displacement sensor is disposed relative to the displacement transmission element to measure displacement of the transmission element, and a displacement sensor is disposed relative to the mechanical stage to measure displacement of the mechanical stage. The compliant reference element and the displacement transmission element can be configured with respect to the constraining fixture to accommodate deflection of the compliant structure along more than one axis, e.g., along either of two deflection axes.

Abstract:
Micro-electromechanical (MEMS) contact configuration is disclosed, comprising a static contact with at least one contact surface and a movable contact with at least one corresponding contact surface. Particularly flat contact surfaces and correspondingly low contact resistance can be achieved, if at least one contact surface plane is formed by a crystal plane of the wafer. Furthermore a method for manufacturing such a contact configuration is proposed, wherein the contact surfaces are obtained by wet anisotropic etching of a silicon wafer, if need be preceded by appropriate masking to expose the to be edged regions only, if need be followed by coating with an electrically conductive layer, e.g., a metal layer.
