This invention solves problems due to employing error degraded data in digital processing. It particularly solves multi-generation problems wherein transform data degrade during each inverse transform and forward transform cycle even without any processing due to the rounding and clipping errors. It provides methods, systems and devices for reduced-error processing of transform-coded data. After inverse transformation of transform data, high-precision numbers are converted to integers and clipped to an allowed range forming converted data. High-precision differences are obtained by subtracting the high-precision output of the inverse transform from the converted data. The converted data can be manipulated and sent to output devices which expect integer data. Processed high-precision numbers are formed by adding the high-precision differences to the processed converted data. Thus, the rounding and clipping errors are greatly reduced in the processed high-precision numbers.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for halftoning digital images renders color data subject to constraints on the number of colorants which can be deposited on a single pixel and constraints on consecutive pixels rendered with the same color. The color data to be rendered is mapped into a second data set in an achievable color gamut space. Then, using a digital halftoning method in the achievable color gamut space, the second data set is rendered, so that the constraints are satisfied.
Shift And/Or Merge Of Transformed Data Along One Axis
A method of transform domain processing of transformed data is applied to image processing in various applications. A one-dimensional algorithm allows for the selection of an arbitrary contiguous eight component DCT sub-block from two adjacent DCT blocks that foregoes the expense of image manipulation in the real domain. Due to the fact that non-zero DCT coefficients are generally sparse, this algorithm lends itself nicely to the development of special cases which are faster than methods in use today. The de-quantization and re-quantization can be combined at execution time with the constants.

Although advantageous to many applications employing digital transformed data, the invention is particularly advantageous for use in digital studios during editing of MPEG-coded, JPEG-coded and wavelet-coded video and audio data.

A method and system for efficient scaling in the transform domain, wherein transform coefficient data is provided as an input to a data processing system and scaled in the transform domain by application of a combined matrix. Some embodiments utilize discrete cosine transform data. One embodiment of the invention generates a combined matrix for one-dimensional scaling by selecting a rational scaling factor and matrix dimension value, generating a matrix with some zero values, applying a one-dimensional inverse transform, regrouping, and applying a one-dimensional forward transform. One application of the invention performs up-scaling operations, and another performs down-scaling operations. The invention also provides for two-dimensional scaling by selecting horizontal and vertical scaling parameters and generating first and second combined matrices responsive to the parameters and combining them into a single combined matrix. The invention may also incorporate a predetermined cost function.
