Abstract:A remote meter reading system employing a plurality of multiplexers coupled between the telephone central office and remote interrogatable utility data sources. A number of lines are connected to a single data channel through a plurality of multiplexers. An interrogation signal source is connected to the multiplexer for sending controllable level interrogation signals to the data sources under the control of a microprocessor. The level of interrogation signal which produces a response from each different data source is stored. Upon failure to evoke a response from the highest level of interrogation signal causes that line to be recorded in memory as defective. The number of OFF-HOOK conditions encountered in a predetermined period is recorded and any excess of a predetermined value deleted as a line trouble condition. Signalling in the preferred embodiment is via pulse width modulated signals. In the alternate embodiment, dual tone signalling is employed.

Abstract:A circuit and a computer program for enabling the monitoring of a plurality of switch settings at remote sites by central telephone exchange equipment through regular telephone lines is described. To compensate for slow drift variations in line impedance, the impedance of each line is continually calculated from the measurements, and any small change is used to update a line impedance correction factor, while any large instantaneous change is used to update the data counter. Telephone exchange battery variations which may be large and instantaneous, are compensated for by measuring the battery voltage immediately prior to measuring the line impedances, and correcting the line impedance readings with a battery voltage correction factor. Other types of temporary signal interference which are frequently present in telephone switching equipment are identified and rejected by applying consistency criteria to multiple readings which have been corrected by the aforementioned method. Using these techniques, long distance telephone lines may be used to monitor the settings of switches in parallel or series with selected resistances even where the variations in battery voltage, line impedance and signal interference may produce voltage variations on the telephone lines which may exceed the voltage variations produced by the switched resistance by a factor of five or more.

Abstract:A utility meter reading system for sending utility usage information over a plurality of telephone lines is disclosed including a plurality of interface devices, at least one interface coupled to each of the telephone lines and each interface coupled to at least one utility usage monitor for receiving usage information therefrom and for sending alternating current representations of the usage information over its discrete telephone line responsive to receiving at least one distinct alternating current interrogation signal from its discrete telephone line, a multiplexer for sending at least one distinct alternating current interrogation signal over each of the plurality of telephone lines, the interface receiving the plurality of alternating current representations of the usage information, a receiver for converting the alternating current representations into a plurality of digital representations, each representing usage information from a single utility usage monitor, and a processor for communicating the plurality of digital representations to an external digital interfacing device.
