Abstract:

A universal retractor and sealing system used in conjunction with surgical instruments such as cannulas, endoscopes surgical or non-surgical instruments or other tools. The user manipulates the instrument so as to create a projecting surface located inside the cavity. An outward force applied to the instrument body seats the projecting surface against the inner wall of the cavity, which can be used to form at least a partial seal against fluid. With the projecting surface positioned against the cavity wall, the instrument can be manipulated so as to act as a retractor, expanding the workable area and/or the field of view as required.

Abstract:

An adjustable surgical instrument is provided in which adjustment of curvature may be provided during the surgical procedure while the instrument is within a body cavity. The adjustment of curvature may be made from no curvature, that is, straight, to ninety degrees or more. A surgical instrument is provided with an outer, intermediate and inner hollow member. The hollow intermediate member is mounted within the outer hollow member, and is provided with a preformed curvature, preferably in its distal region. The intermediate member is provided with a preformed curvature, preferably in its distal region, which curvature may be reduced or eliminated by longitudinally moving the outer hollow member over the curvature in the hollow intermediate member. The intermediate member has memory such that the initial curvature is recovered upon removal of the hollow outer member from the area of curvature of the intermediate hollow member. An inner member having flexibility at least in the area of curvature is provided with a cutting implement on its distal end.

A flexible surgical instrument is provided which is ideal for providing flexibility in surgery performed through a small incision, such as arthroscopic surgery. In one embodiment, the surgical instrument is provided with an outer member having at least one opening in a distal region and a hollow inner member disposed within the outer member for transmitting force applied to the proximal end to move a cutting implement disposed at the distal end. The cutting implement is constructed and adapted to perform a cutting function at the opening in the outer member. The hollow inner member is substantially flexible between its proximal and distal ends. The outer member is provided with a predetermined flexibility and rigidity such that the outer member is provided with sufficient flexibility to be manually bent by a surgeon during and operation, and provided with sufficient rigidity to retain such bend during the continued performance of the operation with the surgical instrument.

A surgical instrument includes a support member that extends distally from a base, carrying at a distal region a window defining an opening. A surgical tool at least partially disposed in the distal region is movable with respect to the window to cut tissue extending through the opening.
