Abstract:
Apparatus and method for forming a pin and nut fastener assembly for temporarily or permanently securing two panels having conventional drilled generally aligned holes into which the assembly is inserted. Weight of the pin and nut is reduced while retaining predetermined industry established strength requirements. The thread section of the pin is reduced along with the mating thread of the nut. The pin may be cold-worked in critical areas.

Abstract:
A strut for propping open the door of an aircraft including an outer tube connected at one end to the aircraft and a telescoping inner member connected to the aircraft door. The inner member is extended out of the outer tube when the door is fully opened and automatically locks in place. The strut can be unlocked by grasping a sleeve mounted on the outer tube, pulling it downwardly while rotating the same clockwise. The strut remains locked until the door is lifted upwardly until it stops thereby unlocking the strut. Lowering the door returns the strut to its stowed position with the inner member received within the outer tube.

Abstract:
A nut or collar formed from a high-speed cold working process wherein the nut or collar has portions of the material forming the nut or collar removed therefrom thereby maintaining the strength of the nut or collar. The removed material is preferably in the form of curved scallops at the base of the collar or nut at spaced locations thereon formed during the cold working process.

Abstract:
A fastener assembly having a bolt having a shaft with a plurality of spaced elongated closed end splines spaced from a like plurality of open ended splines. Each pair of splines are interconnected by a crossover slot of the same or greater depth than the closed end and open ended splines. The entry into the crossover slots is wide enough for ears of a retaining ring that is inserted onto the open ended splines of the bolt shaft to pass through the crossover slots and be forced out of a restricted width exit leading from the crossover slot to the closed end spline thereby trapping the ring on the bolt shaft with the ears reciprocating in the closed end splines.
A captive panel fastener assembly is disclosed for joining a panel to a sub-structure. The fastener assembly includes a sleeve bolt, a grommet assembly which is attached to the panel and a receptacle assembly which is attached to the sub-structure. The sleeve bolt passes through the grommet assembly and engages the receptacle assembly thereby joining the panel and the sub-structure. The bolt includes an enlarged head at one end, an intermediate body portion and a nose at the other end. A groove is provided between the nose and the body portion of the bolt. The grommet assembly includes a sleeve in a hole in the panel and the sleeve has a plurality of resilient inwardly extending tangs formed out of the body of the sleeve which tangs move inwardly upon insertion of the nose through the sleeve until the nose moves past the tangs and the tangs enter the groove and return to their original inwardly extending position thereby retaining the bolt in a hold out condition with respect to the panel while permitting the bolt to be pushed to a position wherein the tangs ride along the body portion of the bolt until the head thereof abuts against the panel. Thus, the sleeve bolt is retained in the panel and remains in its withdrawn position when the panel is disengaged from the sub-structure.
A latch mechanism is disclosed which includes a housing in which a rotor assembly is rotatably journalled within the housing and rotatable between fully locked and unlocked positions. The rotor assembly is provided with a movable member or latching surface for latching to an eyebolt or the like. An indicator flag is slidably mounted in the rotor assembly and is restricted to common rotation with the rotor assembly. The flag is slidably movable between an extended position wherein a portion of the flag extends out of the rotor assembly and a recess position where the flag is not visible externally of the rotor assembly. The flag is biased to the extended position so that it remains extended and visible until the rotor assembly is moved to a fully locked position. The flag remains in the recessed position only when the rotor assembly is in the fully locked position. A plunger which is slidably mounted within the housing substantially perpendicular to the flag couples with the flag to prevent the flag and rotor assembly from rotating.

Calif. man diagnosed with meningitis is brain dead
A family spokeswoman said Brett Shaad was declared brain dead Friday afternoon but remained on life support. That corrected a statement made earlier in the day by West Hollywood Councilman John Duran who said Shaad had been removed from life support.
"This is the most dense part of Los Angeles and West Hollywood. We have 20,000 people per square mile living in this area. One fire out of control could cost dozens of lives," said John Duran, mayor of West Hollywood where four of the fires were set.
