Abstract:
Novel additive solutions useful for the storage of human red blood cells (RBCs) under refrigerated conditions are disclosed. Also disclosed is a method of using the additive solutions in an appropriate volume to preserve RBCs at about 1 to 6Â C. for up to at least about 11 weeks or more. Additive solutions and processes in accordance with the present invention allow the viable storage of human RBCs for an extended period of time in a solution which is directly infusible in humans.

Abstract:
The combination of recombinant factor VIIa and fibrinogen is effective in treatment for bleeding where direct pressure, tourniquets, indirect pressure, surgical ligation, bandaging, and transfusion of blood or plasma products are typically used. The combination of factor VIIa and fibrinogen is administered intravenously, either sequentially or simultaneously. The compositions may be safely circulated in the blood vessels to sites of injury. This is effective for single or multiple external or internal wounds.

Abstract:
The present invention provides an aqueous composition for storage of red blood cells consisting essentially of: adenine; dextrose; at least one non-metabolizable membrane-protectant sugar; and a specifically defined pH buffering system. Also provided are improved methods for preserving red blood cells and methods for increasing the viability, membrane retention, and recoverability while suppressing apoptosis, hemolysis, and post-reinfusion clearance of stored red blood cells which utilize the novel compositions.

Abstract:
A hemostatic tissue sealant sponge and a spray for acute wounds are disclosed. The sponge comprises hydrophobically modified polymers that anchor themselves within the membrane of cells in the vicinity of the wound. The seal is strong enough to substantially prevent the loss of blood inside the boundaries of the sponge, yet weak enough to substantially prevent damage to newly formed tissue upon recovery and subsequent removal of the sponge. In examples, the polymers inherently prevent microbial infections and are suitable for oxygen transfer required during normal wound metabolism. The spray comprises hydrophobically modified polymers that form solid gel networks with blood cells to create a physical clotting mechanism to prevent loss of blood. In an example, the spray further comprises at least one reagent that increases the mechanical integrity of the clot. In another example, the reagent prevents microbial infection of the wound.

Abstract:
A light collector includes a light sampler for gathering light and a light receiver for receiving the light gathered by the sampler and for transmitting it to a system such as a light illumination control system. The output of the light collector varies with the intensity of the light gathered by the light sampler and can be increased or decreased for a given gathered light intensity by adjusting the distance between the light sampler and light receiver. Accordingly, if the light collector is used to provide to a light illumination control system the actual light intensity of the area in which light illumination is controlled, the light intensity maintained by the control system can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the output of the collector. Also, the present invention includes a light gathering device for a light collector. The light gathering device includes a lens having angled portions for gathering light from a broad area.
An electrical control system controls an electrical load device, particularly an inductive load such as the ballast of a gas discharge lamp which generates a back EMF when power is removed therefrom. The control system includes a first electronic switch for controlling the application of power to and withdrawal of power from the load and a second electronic switch which controls the first electronic switch. The second switch is responsive to a command signal preferably occurring between 90. degree. and 180. degree. of the AC power half wave to turn on and thus switch off the first switch which in turn withdraws power from the load. The circuit remains in this state until a predetermined circuit condition occurs at which point the potentials on the load and the AC power supply are at predetermined levels. The equal potential turns the second switch off, whereupon power is reapplied to the load by the first electronic switch. In an inductive load, the back EMF generated when the first switch withdraws power from the load serves as a feedback signal which is referenced against the AC power supply to determine an equal potential circuit condition.

rise in oil will immediately be met with a ramp-up in shale production, but it's not clear how rapidly that would occur. Hess' CEO, John Hess, recently noted that there is typically a one-year to two-year lag from the first investment decision to the production of oil, longer than many anticipated.
