Abstract:

A solar receiver unit comprises a generally tubular body having an internal passage for conducting a heat-transfer fluid, and an inlet chamber for receiving concentrated sunlight from a solar reflector when in use. The inlet chamber is shaped to direct reflection of concentrated sunlight at least one time in a direction that provides the reflected sunlight with an additional opportunity to heat the heat-transfer fluid.

Abstract:

Methods and apparatus are described for estimating shear wave slowness of formations traversed by a borehole from guided wave acoustic log data. Acoustic energy is generated at a point in the borehole and received at at least four receiver stations spaced one from the other and from the generating point. Full wave forms of the received signals are produced and windowed to identify guided wavelets. Fourier transforms of the guided wavelets are obtained and from these determined the phase velocity and frequency of the guided wavelet. Values of formation density, drilling fluid density, drilling fluid slowness and borehole diameter are measured and a value of Poissons ratio may be estimated. A multi-dimensional matrix is established comprised of predetermined ranges of assumed values of frequency, Poissons ratio, drilling fluid slowness, drilling fluid density, formation density, phase velocity and borehole diameter. The measured data is fitted to the multi-dimensional matrix to obtain an estimate of shear wave slowness at the point in the borehole, and the estimate is recorded as a function of depth.

Abstract:

Shear and compressional velocities of acoustic waveforms in the earth formations surrounding a well bore are measured by analyzing the waveforms propagated through different lengths of substantially the same formation intervals. Phase analysis techniques applied to waveforms windowed for compressional waves are used to determine the propagation velocity of the compressional waves through the differential path lengths. The waveforms are then windowed for shear waves, the discrete fourier transforms of the windowed waveforms are taken, and the cross-spectral magnitude and phase for each frequency is computed as the product of the discrete fourier transform sample of one with the conjugate of the other. Several different moveouts are calculated, the resultant phases from each analyzed, and a band specified where the zero phase moveouts are roughly consistent. This ultimately specifies a final, accurate shear window moveout for determining, using phase analysis techniques, the shear propagation velocity characteristics of the respective earth formation intervals.

Abstract:

A predetermined signal is removed from waveforms generated in an acoustic investigation of a borehole to enable the accurate detection of relatively weak formation signals. A plurality of waveforms are produced from different sonic receivers used in an acoustic investigation of an earth formation from inside casing set in a borehole. The waveforms include a casing signal which is representative of the acoustic casing wave which traveled from a transmitter through the casing to the receivers. The casing signal is removed by aligning the waveforms in accordance with the known travel times for the casing wave from the transmitter to the receivers and summing the waveforms to produce a casing signal emphasized waveform. A portion of the latter is then subtracted from the waveforms from which the casing signal is thus effectively filtered to facilitate detection and analysis of formation signals present in the waveforms.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for estimating shear wave velocities where such velocities are difficult or impossible to measure because the shear energy transmission is attenuated or its velocity is equal to or less than direct mud velocity or because the shear wave may not propagate at all under certain conditions. The method and apparatus relate to an indirect technique for determining shear modulus by measuring the phase velocity of the Stoneley wave excitation and using it to estimate the shear modulus and the shear velocity. Using at least two receivers, a window is placed over the Stoneley arrival of the wave detected at each receiver and the Fourier transform of each wave is taken. The difference in phase of the Stoneley wave arrivals is determined. The relative shear modulus involving the Lame constants is estimated by a procedure which includes matching two points on Stoneley wave dispersion curves.
