Abstract:

Phenolic siloxane compositions are prepared in a first embodiment by combining phenol with an aldehyde and an alkoxy or silanol-functional silicone intermediate; in a second embodiment by combining a phenolic novolac resin with a formaldehyde donor and an alkoxy or silanol-functional silicone intermediate; and in a third embodiment by combining a phenolic resole resin with an alkoxy or silanol-functional silicone intermediate. Optionally, a catalyst to facilitate formation of a phenolic resin from phenol and formaldehyde can be added, a catalyst to facilitate condensation of the phenolic resin can be added, and at least one catalyst to facilitate hydrolysis and/or condensation of the silicone intermediate can be added. The phenolic resin catalyst can include acids, bases, and formaldehyde donors. The silicone intermediate catalyst can include organometallic compounds, amine compounds, and mixtures thereof.

Abstract:

Apparatus for providing thermal and pressure sealing in an elongated space of varying width between adjacent surfaces of first and second members mounted for at least limited lateral movement therebetween. The apparatus may comprise: a first elongated support member attached to one of the adjacent surfaces; a second elongated support member attached to the other of the adjacent surfaces; and an elongated seal member sandwiched between the first and second support members. In its non-deformed state, the elongated seal member may be substantially cylindrical but capable of deformation to accommodate limited lateral movement between the adjacent surfaces and varying widths of the space therebetween.

Abstract:

Fire resistant pipes and pipe fittings include a structural pipe wall formed from helically wound reinforcing fiber that is bonded together with a thermoset polymer resin selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins, siloxane-modified phenolic resins, furan resins, and mixtures thereof. In a first embodiment, a resin rich fire resistant layer is applied to the surface of the structural pipe wall. The carrier is capable of accommodating a large amount of resin. The resin used to impregnate the carrier is selected from the same group of resins used to form the structural pipe wall. It is desired that both resins be compatible, and preferably be the same, to facilitate forming a bond between the structural pipe wall and the fire resistant layer during cure. In a second embodiment, a number of energy absorbing material layers are disposed around the structural pipe wall, and are formed from a material capable of absorbing heat energy from a surrounding outside layer to produce a thermally insulating gas therebetween. A number of fiber-reinforced resin layers are disposed around the absorbing material layers.

Abstract:

Fire resistant pipes and pipe fittings include a structural pipe wall formed from helically wound reinforcing fiber that is bonded together with a thermoset polymer resin selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins, siloxane-modified phenolic resins, furan resins, and mixtures thereof. A jacket is disposed around the structural pipe wall and comprises alternating release layers and fiber-reinforced resin layers. The release layer is formed from a material that is incompatible with the resin of the structural pipe wall and fiber-reinforced resin layers, and is energy absorbing to improve impact resistance and reduce thermal stress. The jacket is formed having a sufficient number of alternating layers, having sufficient layer thicknesses, to protect the structural pipe wall from heat induced failure produced by exposing the outermost pipe wall to a 1,000. degree. C. flame for at least five minutes in a dry condition.

Abstract:

Adhesive/adherend systems of this invention comprise a siloxane-modified adhesive component and a siloxane-modified adherend component. The siloxane-modified adhesive component is prepared by combining an epoxy resin with an organosilane ingredient, a polysiloxane resin, an amine hardener, an organometallic catalyst, a base catalyst, and any thickener and extender pigment. The siloxane-modified adherend component is prepared using a polysiloxane resin and may also contain other resins such epoxy, phenolic, polyester, vinyl ester, polyurethane, polyamide, melamine, furan, acrylate, thermoplastic polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polycarbonate, ABS, polystyrene, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, polyamide, and polypropylene resins. When placed into contact with one another, the siloxane groups in the siloxane-modified adhesive and siloxane-modified adherend components form Si--O--Si bonds between themselves to form an attachment force that both occurs at ambient temperature within a reasonable amount of time, and that is greater than otherwise possible using adhesive/adherend systems having unmodified adhesive and/or adherend components.
