Abstract:

Method and devices are provided for extended and controlled delivery of parathyroid hormone to a patient. The method includes implanting a medical device into the patient, the medical device comprising a substrate, a plurality of reservoirs in the substrate, a release system contained in each of the reservoirs, wherein the release system comprises parathyroid hormone; and controllably releasing a pharmaceutically effective amount of the parathyroid hormone from the reservoirs. The parathyroid hormone can be released intermittently, such as once daily over an extended period (e. g. , two months, ten months, or more. ). The device can further include reservoirs containing a bone resorption inhibitor or other drug for release. The devices are useful in delivering PTH for the treatment and prevention of bone loss, such as associated with osteoporosis.

Abstract:

Methods and devices are provided for selective release or exposure of reservoir contents, such as a drug formulation or diagnostic reagent, sealed in a reservoir, e.g., a microreservoir. The devices comprise a substrate; one or more reservoirs located in and defined by the substrate; reservoir contents located inside the reservoirs; a reservoir cap or rupturable layer sealing an outlet of the reservoir; and means for disintegrating the reservoir cap or rupturing the rupturable layer; and means for accelerating the release of the reservoir contents from the reservoir through the outlet, or for enhancing diffusional mass transport of a material into or out of the reservoir. The means for accelerating can, for example, include a shape memory material. In a preferred embodiment, the device is adapted for implantation into a human or animal body and comprises an array of several discrete reservoir, each one being individually openable at a desired time.

Abstract:

Electric control signal monitoring and simulating apparatus for use with electrically controlled automatic automobile transmissions comprises a control box having electrical leads and connectors which enable the control box to be connected in electrical series with preexisting electrical connections between an automatic transmission and the associated engine or accessory which provides electric control signals to the transmission. Lights and switches in the control box enable monitoring and/or modifying of the electric control signals to the transmission. Alternatively, the control box may be electrically connected to battery voltage, to ground, and to only the transmission, switches in the control box enabling the electric control signals normally provided to the transmission to be simulated, for example, to bench test the transmission.

Abstract:

A release mechanism for facilitating launching a spin-stabilized self-propelled missile. A missile support includes a rotary turbine having a receptacle defining a spin axis, and a fixed support for supporting the rotary turbine for rotation about the spin axis and for movement axially of the spin axis. A nozzle assembly extends from the missile into the receptacle and includes a fusible joint for heating by high temperature exhaust gases expelled by the missile to release the missile, and an aft nozzle section movable away from the missile on fusing and separation of the fusible joint. An abutment on the rotary turbine is disposed in the path of movement of the aft nozzle section for striking by the aft nozzle section to effect rapid movement of the rotary turbine and receptacle axially away from the missile on fusing and separation of the fusible joint.

An automotive body assembly including an energy absorbing bumper assembly of elastomeric foam material, such as urethane, for compressing to absorb energy in response to an impact with a light means disposed in a recess and support means connected to the light means and supported by the elastomeric material for moving with the elastomeric material upon the compression thereof to move the light means and thereafter return the light means to the initial position. A marking composition for forming marks or indicia on a substrate is provided for laser marking applications. The composition includes a glass frit, a carrier, and absorber particles. The glass frit includes alkali metal oxides, glass forming oxides, and one or more transition metal oxides. The glass frit is devoid of at least one of bismuth and zinc.
