Abstract:

Transvaginal hysterectomy is performed by mechanically engaging and extracting a uterus through opposed cutting and cauterizing elements. The cutting and cauterizing elements are typically provided on an expandable frame which may be positioned at the vaginal os. An associated traction device may be used to pull the uterus through the frame at a controlled rate.

Uterine artery occlusion is performed for the treatment of uterine fibroid using a tool which is introduced through the vaginal wall to the exterior of the uterus. The tool carried clamping elements which may be positioned over the uterine artery. Electrodes or other energy applying devices on the clamping elements may be used to deliver energy to seal the uterine artery. Optionally, the tool may carry ultrasonic, visual, or proximity sensors for detecting the presence of the uterine artery prior to delivering energy.

Abstract:

An intraluminal imaging catheter system for viewing segments of vessels downstream of the catheter itself is provided. The catheter system incorporates an ultrasonic transducer pivotally mounted adjacent the catheter's distal end. A flexible drive means disposed within a flexible tubular member adapted for insertion into the vessel causes the transducer to pivot back and forth to scan a segment of the vessel. Optionally, the forward viewing catheter system of the present invention may be combined with a work element such as a biopsy tool or other device for use in conjunction with the imaging capability.
