Abstract:

Techniques to adaptively manage service requests within a multi-server system. In one embodiment, a service request and a service rule associated with the service request are received. Data about operating parameters of at least one server in a multi-server system are also received as part of a feedback loop. A response to the service request based on the service rule and the operating parameters is determined. Execution of the service request may be modified according to a tiered service rule based on the at least one server reaching a capacity threshold. The modification includes omitting an action in execution of the service request.

Abstract:

A system and method for optically, serially transmitting data to a remote device using an interlaced display device. The data bits to be transmitted are ordered so that the bits are received in proper temporal order by the remote device. At least one of the data bits can be transmitted using the even-numbered horizontal scan lines of the interlaced display device. If all of the data bits can not be transmitted using the even-numbered horizontal scan lines of a usable transmission area, then at least one of the data bits can be transmitted using the odd-numbered horizontal scan lines of the interlaced display device. The binary data bits can be represented by illuminated and non-illuminated horizontal scan lines. An optical detector in the remote device can be used to receive the pulses of light, representing the data bits to be transmitted, from the horizontal scan lines.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for programming a device, such as a universal remote control unit, using a light source, such as a CRT computer monitor coupled to a conventional personal computer. A unidirectional flow of data from the transmitter is used to configure to the receiver. Specifically, a method is provided for synchronizing the baud rates and bytes-per-frame of the receiver and the transmitter. The receiver baud rate is selected based on a "55 hex" synchronization signal received from the transmitter. The receiver measures a synchronization parameter to determine the exact baud rate of the transmitter, to which the receiver synchronizes. Thus, transmitter-to-transmitter baud rate differences, such as those caused by design differences and manufacturing tolerances, do not limit the rate at which data may be transmitted from a particular transmitter to a particular receiver. A method is also provided for verifying the integrity of data received at the receiver. Data is transmitted in segments, and an integrity check parameter is included in each segment.

Abstract:

A spall backing material contiguously attached to an armor plate at least suppresses the formation of lethal armor spall from being propelled from the inner surface of the armor plate when the outer surface of the armor is impacted by a weapon with sufficient impact to release high velocity spall from unprotected armor. When the impedance of the spall suppression armor is equal to or greater than the impedance of the armor plate, the formation of lethal spall in the armor will be prevented. When the spall backing material is reduced in thickness to minimize weight and has an impedance lower than that of the armor plate, or a more powerful weapon is used, armor spallation will occur but will be suppressed by the spall backing material to minimize lethality.

Abstract:

An improved mounting between a cylindrical package, containing a sensitive instrument, and a protective cylindrical housing disposed thereabout. Plugs at opposite ends of the housing each have a conical recess opening toward the other plug and between which the package is confined. O-rings at each end of the package engage the tapered wall of the adjacent recess and absorb longitudinal and radial shock and center the package within the housing. Abstract:

One or more techniques and/or systems are provided for dynamically maintaining user centric data. For example, a data provider app may have knowledge about user centric data associated with a user (e.g., a social network app may have contact information for a social network friend of the user). A user centric profile may be defined for the user centric data based upon information provided by the data provider app (e.g., a contact card may be generated for the social network friend). Responsive to receiving a request for the user centric profile from a requestor app (e.g., an event planning app), the user centric profile may be exposed to the user but not to the requestor app for security and/or privacy purposes. For example, an operating system may present at least some of the user centric profile within an operating system user interface.
