  • Signal Translating Circuit For Variable Area Capacitive Pressure Transducer

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41045955, Aug 1, 1978
  • Filed:
    Dec 27, 1976
  • Appl. No.:
    5/754381
  • Inventors:
John Kenneth Overzet - Elmhurst IL
  • Assignee:
    Borg-Warner Corporation - Chicago IL
  • International Classification:
    G01M 2700
    H03F 100
  • US Classification:
    328 1
  • Abstract:
An electrical circuit translates the capacitance change of a variable area capacitive transducer into a d-c voltage change. The transducer has two electrodes, and the surface of one electrode is anodized or otherwise provided with a dielectric layer. One of the two electrodes is nonlinear, having an apex point nearer the other electrode than the remainder of the electrode surface. As a force is applied to the deformable one of the two electrodes, there is a change in the effective contact area between the electrodes in accordance with the applied pressure, producing a resultant change in capacitance. The signal translating circuit produces a d-c output signal which varies as a function of the transducer capacitance change.
  • Stabilizing Circuit For Controlled Inverter-Motor System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    44370504, Mar 13, 1984
  • Filed:
    Nov 30, 1982
  • Appl. No.:
    6/445647
  • Inventors:
John K. Overzet - Elmhurst IL
  • Assignee:
    Borg-Warner Corporation - Chicago IL
  • International Classification:
    H02P 742
  • US Classification:
    318798
  • Abstract:
Stabilized operation of an inverter and an a-c motor, driven by the inverter, is obtained in the presence of sudden undesired load changes by controlling the inverter so that both the amplitude and frequency of the inverter output a-c voltage will be functions of, and will vary directly with, the d-c bus voltage, with the result that anytime an abrupt abnormal load change causes the d-c bus voltage to vary, a frequency change occurs to compensate for the load change and to stabilize the bus voltage. By employing the d-c bus voltage to regulate the inverter frequency, if there is a sudden decrease, for example, in the mechanical load on the motor, the d-c bus voltage, which will tend to increase, causes the frequency of the inverter output voltage to increase, thereby increasing the motor speed so that the electrical load change across the d-c bus is reduced. As a result, the d-c bus voltage tends to remain relatively constant in spite of the abrupt mechanical load change. When there is a normal variation in load demand, necessitating a different steady state motor speed, a set point or reference voltage may be adjusted to change the amplitude and frequency of the inverter output voltage to the levels needed to drive the motor at the new required speed.
  • Fault Protection Circuit

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41398858, Feb 13, 1979
  • Filed:
    Jun 20, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/808203
  • Inventors:
John K. Overzet - Elmhurst IL
George H. Studtmann - Mount Prospect IL
  • Assignee:
    Borg-Warner Corporation - Chicago IL
  • International Classification:
    H02M 118
  • US Classification:
    363 58
  • Abstract:
An a-c supply system includes an input bridge circuit, connected to receive a-c input voltage and produce an output d-c voltage which is passed through a filter to an inverter having a plurality of thyristor switches, which switches are regulated to produce an a-c output voltage for supplying a load. If two of the switches are inadvertently triggered on to produce a fault across the bus, the rapid discharge of the filter capacitor into this fault is sensed, and the protection circuit provides both simultaneous turn-on of all of the inverter power switches, and turn-off of the input bridge. The input bridge turn-off is achieved by simultaneous removal of the gate drive from all the power switches in the input bridge and commutation of all the power switches in the input bridge circuit, or by interrupting power transfer from the input bridge toward the inverter. In addition to sensing the filter capacitor current, the level of current supplied to the input bridge is monitored so that a sudden rise is detected and utilized to initiate the same protective functions.
